KPHA (channel 11) is a television station in Phoenix, Arizona, United States. It was the first independent television station in Phoenix and, for more than half of its existence, was the only local station in the Phoenix area.
History
The city of Phoenix gained its first independent station on March 25, 1951, when the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) awarded a permit to the Phoenix Broadcasting Company for the purpose of constructing a television station on channel 12. The original studios and transmitter would be located at Pilot Street in Arizona, about 10 miles (16 km) northeast of Phoenix; their old studios are currently still standing along with Frontage Centre, just southeast of the Arizona Border Protection Stations unit within Interstate 8. On March 6, 1951, the station unofficially sent out a very faint test pattern by accident, but found out that it was greatly well received by several people in Phoenix. The station began broadcasting an unusual test pattern for several months, and began regularly scheduled service in April 1953. Although it was the first television station in the Phoenix area, the station was the first independent outlet in the state. As the only independent television station in the market, it carried visual arts, dramedy, children's, newscasts, sports, and imported programmes. It has always been operated under the auspices of their Pacific Time Zone schedule.
