KZKA 101.5 FM is a radio station operating in the heart of downtown Los Angeles, California. The station is the only known radio station owned and operated by a high school in Los Angeles County. The station’s mission is to provide the audience with a diverse listening experience while helping to expose the students to the skillsets needed to gain employment in the radio business. KZKA’s programming plays a variety of musical genres and showcases local and international underground artists. The station also displays live content from local creatives.
History[edit] In 2013, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) announced the upcoming availability of 101.5 LPFM in Los Angeles. Receiving over 100 applications, the FCC subsequently informed the applicants that the largest consortium of applicants would be granted the station for shared programming. Eight organizations partnered and were awarded construction permits by the FCC on May 2, 2016. These eight organizations were Ballet Folklorico Ollin, Boyle Heights Arts Conservatory, Catalyst Network of Communities, [Edgewood High School], Los Angeles Academy of Arts and Enterprise, National Hispanic Media Coalition, Prism Church, The Emperor's Circle of Shen Yun. Catalyst Network of Communities, Edgewood High School, and Prism Church were unable to proceed with planned antenna construction. A timeshare agreement among the remaining five broadcasting partners indicates each partner’s contribution to the signal’s transmission. KZKA began broadcasting on December 13, 2016. Shortly thereafter, Los Angeles Academy of Arts and Enterprise launched radio classes to teach students requisite skills for radio broadcasting and music production. (There is no other known high school radio station in Los Angeles County.) Since its launch, KZKA has had multiple instances of interference from unlicensed radio stations operating on the same frequency.
