On August 4, 2023, American streamer Kai Cenat announced a giveaway, comprising various gaming devices and peripherals, to take place at Union Square in Manhattan. The gathering soon became a riot as some members of the crowd began displaying hostility towards police officers at the event. The gathering was dispersed at approximately 5:30 PM EDT, with the NYPD arresting dozens of attendees, including Cenat and 30 minors.[citation needed]

Prelude[edit]

On August 4, 2023, American streamer, actor and rapper Kai Cenat announced on his YouTube channel a "huge" giveaway, where people could win items including gaming consoles, gaming chairs, PCs, and other items by correctly answering questions related to streaming and YouTube.[2] The video announcing the giveaway gained two million views.[3] Cenat did not receive a permit before the giveaway and the NYPD was unaware of it before its announcement.[2]

Riot[edit]

The giveaway was scheduled for 4:00 PM at Union Square in Manhattan, but by 3:00 PM the area was filled with fans. Soon confrontation arose between some people in the crowd and police, with some people throwing objects such as bottles, construction pylons, and plywood at NYPD officers monitoring the congregating. Soon the disturbance became more intense, and the police officers present requested assistance. The NYPD called a level four mobilization, the highest possible. Soon the crowd grew to over 2,000 people, though it is as of August 4th unknown how many were rioters as opposed to other, non-violent attendees, and the NYPD sent over 1,000 officers to disrupt and disperse the gathering. By 5:30 PM, officers dispersed the crowd, arrested at least 66 attendees, and blocked off the area.[4]

Aftermath[edit]

The NYPD reported that they had arrested Cenat, along with 65 others. Property damage was reported including smashed windows, broken taillights, and other instances of vandalism. An unknown number of injuries were reported by NYPD sources.[5] In a press conference, Chief Jeffrey Maddrey reported that a 17-year-old was wounded by a large firecracker, and noted the destruction of multiple police cars and food carts. As of the evening of August 4, Cenat has been charged with inciting a riot.[6]
