Kailia Posey
Kailia Lexis Posey (Las Vegas, NV, April 19, 2006[1][2] – Birch Bay State Park, Washington, May 2, 2022[3]) was an American beauty pageant contestant, contortionist, actress, and reality show star.[4]
She rose to popularity following numerous appearances on the TLC reality show, Toddlers and Tiaras; and after being featured in an Internet meme commonly known as "Grinning Girl." Kailia was also known for her contortion artistry, and for her role in the 2019 Netflix film, Eli[5].
Personal Life
Kailia was born as Kailia Deliz in Las Vegas, NV, to Marcy Posey Gatterman and Franco Deliz[6]. At the time of her death, Kailia's stepfather was Steve Gatterman[7]. Her elder full blood brother was Jayden Kai Posey[8]. Following her divorce from Franco Deliz, Marcy Posey married Greg Posey[9], and Kailia also took on the new surname. Kailia had a half-brother, Kyle Dean, from her mother's first marriage to Jody Parker, and three step-siblings through Steve Gatterman,: Dane, Davis, and Mia[10]. Kailia lived her childhood in Las Vegas, NV, and then later moved to Washington state, where attended Lynden High School[5].
Grinning girl (meme)
At the age of 5[11], Kailia became famous as the face of a meme titled grinning girl.[12][13] The meme was generated from one of the interview segments of a Toddlers and Tiaras episode[11].
Filmography
From 2011-2012, Kailia appeared on 27 episodes of the TLC reality show, Toddlers and Tiaras[5], where she became a fan favorite for her stage presence and contortion performances. She played the role of Agnes in the 2019 Netflix film, Eli[5].
Beauty Pageants - Later Activities
Kailia competed in pageants from the age of 3 until her death at the age of 16[14]. She was featured in glitz pageants on Toddlers and Tiaras. Kailia had recently won the title of Miss Lynden Teen in 2021, and was preparing to compete in the 2022 Miss Washington Teen pageant[14]. Over her years in the pageant circuit, Kailia was coached by Cambrie Littlefield.
Following her death, Kailia's family stated to TMZ: that “She won countless crowns and trophies after competing on the pageant circuit her entire life. Her highly acclaimed talent as a contortionist had already led to professional touring job offers, and she had recently been selected to be a cheerleader at her high school next fall.[14]”
Kailia's contortion artistry was featured on her Instagram and Youtube accounts.
Death
Posey died by suicide, and was reportedly found inside a car at Birch Bay State Park, Whatcom County in Washington state. [15][16][17][18][19][20] As of May 7, 2022, conflicting sources claim alternate causes of her death, though the location is consistent across articles[21]. Her family issued the public statement:::, "Although she was an accomplished teenager with a bright future ahead of her, unfortunately in one impetuous moment, she made the rash decision to end her earthly life.[14]"
