Kailum Graves

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Kailum Graves (born 1984 in Southport, Australia) is a contemporary artist and binary archivist from in Brisbane, Australia.

Early Life and Artistic Career[edit]

Kailum Graves was born in Southport in 1984 to Michelle Graves and Bruce McCabe, both school teachers. He was 6 when his parents separated. He lived with his mother and his stepmother, a swim school teacher, until they separated. He moved out of home when he was 14 years old. Throughout his childhood he experienced domestic violence, sexual assault, rape, abuse.[1]. Kailum suffers from post-traumatic stress, depression, and social anxiety.[1]

He later described his childhood and adolescent years as having "long-lasting consequences on my perception of self".[1] He never spoke about his childhood. He felt embarrassed and ashamed. Instead, he expressed himself through art.

Kailum attended art college but dropped out after one year due to financial pressures and and feeling estranged by the other participants who came predominately from privileged and wealthy backgrounds.[2] He vents this frustration and the fact that money is the principal gauge of success in his work #1 [3]

Curriculum vitae[edit]

Kailum has exhibited extensively internationally, as well as locally in Australia with artists such as Anne Ferran, Tamara Dean, Justine Varga, Cyrus Tang, Petrina Hicks, Polixeni Papapetrou, Michael Cook,[4][5] and been personally wined and dined (and eventually made drunk) by Guan Wei.[6] Kailum won the 2016 Clayton Utz Art Award with his work Transillumination.[7] Kailum has exhibited at the National Portrait Gallery, Canberra (2016)[8]; had international exhibitions in the United Kingdom, Italy, Germany[9], Greece[10], Mexico[11], Switzerland[12], China[13], Brazil, Denmark[14], Iceland, and the United States[15]; and been a finalist in numerous international and national art awards, such as BBA Artist Prize, Berlin[16]; MAMA Art Foundation National Photography Prize (2016)[17], the Vida Lahey Memorial Travelling Scholarship, Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art Foundation (2019); Milburn Art Prize (2019); Clayton Utz Art Award (2016, 2017, 2018)[18]; Fremantle Arts Centre Print Award (2018)[19], Incinerator Art Award (2015, 2016).
