Kakkay Abbasi
Kakkay Abbasi are Sheikhs from Rupnagar (formerly Ropar). A Punjabi Speaking community in Sirhind region of Punjab. Shekhian Mohalla belongs to this community in Ropar / Rupnagar. Kakkay Abbasi migrated to Pakistan in 1947 in Lahore and Sheikhupura Districts.[1]
According to Ambala Gazetteer edition (1883-84)[2] and edition (1923-24). [3] Tehsil Ropar counts their population.
"(Sheikhs) were land holders but depend largely on their tenants and do not perform agriculture themselves."[4] They are mentioned as "She khs" or Sheikhs. Who are above Pathans but below to Sayyads. [5]
Census Report of 1941 describes Kakkay Abbasi community of Ropar as prosperous government contractors and gold Jewellers.
Origin[edit]
This tribe is descended from Abbas ibn Abdul-Muttalib. They made colony in Sirhind near Ropar in 1520.[5]
Religion[edit]
Kakkay Abbasi are Sunni and Wahabi. Masjid Sheikh Abbasia in Ropar city belongs to this community.
