The Kaliwa River is a river located in the province of Quezon, Philippines. Originating in the Sierra Madre mountain range, the river flows through the municipalities of General Nakar and Infanta.[1] It joins the Kanan River to form the Agos River, which eventually empties into the Philippine Sea.[2]
Ecology and biodiversity
The Kaliwa River basin forms part of the Sierra Madre biodiversity corridor, supporting indigenous flora and fauna, including endangered species protected under the Kaliwa Watershed Forest Reserve.[1] The surrounding ancestral lands are populated by the Dumagat-Remontado indigenous peoples, who depend on the river basin for fishing, agriculture, and cultural heritage.[3]
Infrastructure
The river is the primary site for the Kaliwa Low Dam, managed by the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS).[1] The project aims to supplement Metro Manila's water supply by constructing a 60-meter-high dam and reservoir along the river.[4]
