From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Kamaka Pili (born 1989) is a Kailua-bred Native Hawaiian cultural practitioner of lomilomi and lāʻau lapaʻau, a cultural consultant, artist, producer and host, and news anchor & reporter.

Education

After graduating from Kamehameha Schools Kapālama in 2006,[1] Kamaka set his sights on higher education at the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science.[2] With a heightened interest in cultural practices, he continued his journey of education at Windward Community College, focusing on lāʻau lapaʻau in the Hawaiian Studies department as his intended field of study. He then continued elevating his knowledge of medicinal remedies through native and introduced plant species at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa in 2013. Kamaka has since practiced these forms of ancestral knowledge through workshops and personalized activities with family and friends.[3]

Profession

Kamaka has had years of experience leading up to his career as a news anchor and reporter, starting with his interest in his high school’s media club highlighted at Hawaiʻi’s international film festival in 2006.[1] He then took the platform of art and education, and used them simultaneously in the creation of his designer brand Naʻau Walaʻau in 2014.[4] His jewelry and clothing designs carry a message of responsibility, in the hopes that he could inspire other Native Hawaiians to better understand their heritage, and for visitors to also respect the significance of his native heritage.[5]

With an added interest in providing accurate pronunciations and descriptions of Hawaiian place names, Kamaka took to the streets and highlighted on his social media one street name or significant place around Hawaiʻi each week, birthing his very own talk show Aloha Authentic.[6] Since 2014, Kamaka has been building his platform, gaining a strong following from communities across Hawaiʻi that eventually landed him and Aloha Authentic on KHON2 News’ morning segment Wake Up 2Day. He has not only continued to highlight specific place names and streets in Hawaiʻi, but has also invited cultural practitioners and prominent members of the Native Hawaiian community to sit with him and engage in dialogue that helps to bring meaningful knowledge and information to those watching at home. While maintaining this TV platform for the last 4 years, Kamaka has grown in the news company to become their weather anchor & reporter since 2018.
