K. S. Ratnakar

Dr.Kamaraju.S.Ratnakar is an internationally well-known pathologist from AIIMS, New Delhi. He is one of the few experts in ocular pathology (RP Centre, AIIMS) in India. He is a former Dean at Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences, Hyderabad. He is the Director of Academics and Research at Global Medical Education and Research Foundation Of Global Hospitals, Hyderabad and Vice President of this foundation.[1]. With over 200 scientific publications, equal number of presentations, over 15 awards, two books, several chapters in Pathology text books, he has keen interest in scientific publications. Dr. Ratnakar has served as the Editor of the Indian Journal of Pathology and Senior Associate Editor of Bahrain Medical Bulletin and several other academic journals[2]. Besides being a renowned medical practioner, he is a popular writer, a very much sought after motivational speaker in Telugu and English, a devotee and a unique personality who combines spirituality in whatever he does. His pleasant and powerful oratorical skills are a rare treat[3]. In 2015 there was a talk in Telugu by Dr. K. S. Ratnakar, Chairman, Global Hospitals, Hyderabad. The learned speaker drawing messages from Bhagawan's writings and aptly aided by captivating stories gave the gathering a lot of food for thought and an insight into how Bhagawan expects us to lead our lives[4]

Early life

He was born on 30th November 1944 at Guntur, Andhra Pradesh to Late Sri Kamaraju Bapayya and late Smt Kamaraju Sarojini Devi in a middle class family. His father was a Regional Director of Public Instruction and mother a District Educational officer. He is married to Rajakumari  and has two daughters. One is a doctor married to an engineer living at Iowa and the other is a an Engineer married to a doctor nephrologist , living at Modesto, California.

Education

He studied in Majety Guravayya High School, Guntur, later pre-degree at Hindu College and Andhra Christian College. MBBS, at Guntur Medical College, Doctorate ( MD) , at All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi. He is elected as Fellow of International College of Surgeons (FICS) in 1982, Fellow of International Medical science Academy ( FIMSA ) IN 1985  and also Founder Fellow of Indian College of Pathologists.[2]

Career

He joined AIIMS, New Delhi as Head of ocular Pathology and developed branch till 1979.   He joined as Prof. and Head of the Department of Pathology, at M.R.Medical College, Gulbarga while he is still at 35 years of age. Later he joined as Prof and Head, Department of Pathology, Nizams, Institute of Medical Sciences, Hyderabad(1986 to 2004).He was also Dean, Nizam’s Institute of Medical Science from 1992 --1997. And now he is DIRECTOR-Global Medical Education and Research Foundation of Global Hospitals[2].

Prof. K. S. Ratnakar has been the President (1998) and earlier Secretary (1993 – 1995) of the Indian Association of Pathologists & Microbiologists; Former Chairman, Karnataka State Chapter of Indian Association of Pathology & Microbiology (KCIAPM); Former Editor - in -Chief, Indian Journal of Pathology and Microbiology (IJPM); former Assistant Chief Editor, Bahrain Medical Bulletin; and reviewer for Indian Journal of Opthalmology. He is a member of several professional bodies like International Academy of Pathology- Indian Division (IAP-ID), Indian Association of Pathologists & Microbiologists (IJPM), All India Ophthalmological Society and A. P. Ophthalmic Society.

Having a teaching and research experience of more than 30 years (Post M.D), Prof. Ratnakar is a visiting Professor to several prestigious Institutions like University of Illinois, Chicago; New England Medical Center, Boston; Sankara Nethralaya Medical Research Foundation, Madras; Shivaji University, Sholapur; Sri Krishnadevaraya University, Ananthapur; and Sri Satya Sai Institute Of Medical Sciences University, Prashantigram. He has also been a speaker at several prestigious Institutions of India. He has been an Examiner for Undergraduate & Post Graduate Medical Examinations of Bangalore, Mysore, Pune, Calcutta, Berhampur, Kakatiya, Nagarjuna, Venkateswara and MGR Universities, AIIMS, NIMS, etc.

Dr.Ratnakar has conducted over 12 CMEs & Workshops, has more than 220 publications in national & international Journals and around 120 presentations in national and international fora. He has also delivered several talks on All India Radio (AIR), several lectures on “Science and Spirituality”, “Human values”, in Colleges etc.[6]
