He is the founding Program Director of the M.S. in Medical Laboratory Sciences at Loyola University Chicago Parkinson School of Health Sciences and Public Health. Mirza is a specialist in hematopathology, with expertise in the diagnosis of blood disorders and cancers such as anemia, leukemia, and lymphoma. Mirza is one of the top 10 most followed pathologists on Twitter.[1], has made the Pathology Power List by The Pathologist Magazine in 2018[2][3], 2019[4][5], 2020[6], and 2021, was a Top 5 honoree in ASCP's 40 Under Forty 2017[7], is the inaugural recipient of the 2020 regional and national Brownie M. Anderson Award for New and Emerging Educators[8] (AAMC), received the 2019 ASCP's Mentorship Award, and CAP's Resident Advocate Award in 2020[9]. He is actively involved in teaching graduate students, medical laboratory science students, medical students, pathology residents and hematopathology fellows and regularly speaks at local, national and international venues on the topics of the pathology pipeline[10], social media in medical education[11][12], hematopathology, and novel pedagogical techniques iin pathology. Mirza is the founder of PathElective [13][14][15] and co-founded the virtual pathology student interest group[16], the PathPod pathology podcast, Virtual Pathology Grand Rounds[17], and the Digital Communications Fellowship[18] in Pathology[19] During the COVID-19 pandemic, Mirza was key in highlighting the role of Medical Laboratory Scientists[20]
Early Life and Education
Mirza was born in Lahore, Pakistan and spent his early childhood in West Bromwich. He moved back to Pakistan as a teenager and attended Aitchison College in Lahore, Pakistan for his undergraduate pre-medical education where he served as the Head Boy[21] and was awarded the Rivaz Gold Medal for best graduating student in 1998. He completed his medical education at Aga Khan University Medical College in Karachi, Pakistan[22].
Mirza completed a PhD in Lung and Vascular Biology at the University of Illinois at Chicago[23] where he studied regulation of the endothelial barrier in acute lung injury[24] before completing AP/CP pathology residency[25], hematopathology fellowship, fellowship in thoracic pathology and fellowship in Medical Education Research Innovation Teaching and Scholarship at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine/University of Chicago Hospitals[26]

Career, Research, and Promotion of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine
Mirza was appointed an Assistant Professor of Pathology at Loyola Medicine in 2015 and promoted to Associate Professor and Vice-Chair of Education in 2019. He holds secondary appointments in the department of Medical Education at Stritch School of Medicine and Applied Health Sciences in the Parkinson School of Health Sciences and Public Health. Her serves on several national committees including the Board of Directors of the Central Group of Educational Affairs of the AAMC[34]
Mirza's graduate research focused on the disruption and re-annealing of the endothelial barrier in lung injury. His thesis[35] looked at the role of Caveolin-1[36] and FoxM1b[37] in this process[38]
Mirza's current research focuses on two main areas: hematopathology[39] and pathology medical education. He has been recognized for his work on the pathology pipeline[40], promotion of #TwitterHomework[41][42] , interprofessional laboratory education[43], and the importance of the laboratory in access to healthcare[44] .
Mirza is one of the founders of PathElective, a free, modular online pathology elective that in just 1 year of existence has over 37,000 users from across the globe[45]. The website allows pathology education in an easy to use format.
Mirza also co-founded the PathPod podcast along with the team of Drs. Sara Jiang, Michael Arnold and Christina Arnold[46]. With over 43,000 podcast episodes in just 1 year[47], this podcast celebrates a broad range of pathologists, medical laboratory scientists, and related fields and individuals.
Mirza promotes pathology to many levels of science trainees[48], with a special focus on medical students. His work regarding the pathology curriculum[49], pipeline[50] [51]and medical laboraotory science has been published in both peer-reviewed and non peer-reviewed literature. He is the founder of the PATH_SIG[52], a virtual pathology student interest group, and a founding member of the International Collaborative of Pathologists.[citation needed]
