Kaori Nakano (中野香織, Nakano Kaori; born June 8, 1962)[1] is a Japanese author and cultural historian specializing in the history of fashion, luxury studies, and British culture.[2] She has published more than a dozen books, wrote long-running columns in the Nihon Keizai Shimbun and the Yomiuri Shimbun, and heads the consulting firm Kaori Nakano Co., Lt.[3] She has held academic posts at Meiji University, Showa Women's University, and Aoyama Gakuin University.[2]

Education

Nakano graduated from the Faculty of Letters of the Univerksity of Tokyo and took a second bachelor's degree in British studies at its College of Arts and Sciences. She subsequently completed the coursework for a doctorate at the university's Graduate School of Arts and Sciences of the Univerksity of Tokyo, withdrawing without submitting a dissertation. She was later a visiting researcher at the University of Cambridge and a part-time lecturer at the University of Tokyo.[3][2]

Career

Academic posts

Nakano was a specially appointed professor at Meiji University's School of Global Japanese Studies for ten years from 2008, and a visiting professor at Showa Women's University from 2019 to 2021.[3][2] In 2018 she founded Kaori Nakano Co., Ltd.., through which she conducts her writing, lecturing, and advisory work.[3] In 2021 she served on the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry's Fashion Future Study Group,[4] and since 2021 she has been an expert lecturer for Kyoto Creative Assemblage, a program supported by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.[3][5] In the second half of 2025 she was a visiting professor at Aoyama Gakuin University.[2][6]

Writing

Nakano began writing as a travel writer at age nineteen while still a student.[3] She wrote the monthly column "Mōdo wa kataru" ("Fashion Speaks") in the Nihon Keizai Shimbun for 100 installments from March 2017 to March 2025,[7][8][9] having earlier written the column "Mōdo no hōteishiki" in the same newspaper from 2001 to 2008.[3] She also wrote the column "Style Icon" in the Yomiuri Shimbun for 125 installments from October 2012 to December 2021,[10] and the monthly column "Fashion Saijiki" in the Kitanippon Shimbun's supplement Manmaru for 134 installments from July 2011 to October 2022.[11] Her current serials include the column "Luxury no rashinban" ("A Compass for Luxury") for the Kitanippon Shimbun.[3]

Advisory work

Nakano advised Kochi Shinkin Bank, a regional financial institution in Kōchi Prefecture, on a new dress-code system built around three day- and occasion-based styles; developed over roughly five years, it was introduced for all officers and employees in January 2026.[12][13]

In 2025, she served as one of six judges of the British Business Awards, organized by the British Chamber of Commerce in Japan.[14]

In July 2026, Palace Hotel Tokyo launched a luxury stay package in its "Best of Japan" series — announced in English as "Couture Tokyo: The Art of Japanese Fashion" and marketed in Japan as "Tokyo Fashion Chronicles" — featuring private fashion tours of Ginza, Daikanyama, and Omotesando supervised and curated by Nakano.[15][16][17]

Nakano supervised the Japanese translation of the exhibition texts for "Mary Quant", a Victoria and Albert Museum touring exhibition held at Bunkamura The Museum in Tokyo from November 2022 to January 2023.[18]

Reception

Nakano's Royal Style: A Fashion History of the British Royal Family (2019) was the subject of an eight-page review by Keiko Karube in the academic journal Ningen Bunka Kenkyū of St. Andrew's University (Momoyama Gakuin University).[19]

The Japanese edition of the trade publication WWD has described Nakano as a leading authority on luxury studies.[20]

Shin-Luxury (2022), co-written with Hiroyuki Anzai, was reviewed in the Nihon Keizai Shimbun[21] and by Makoto Shiono in Toyo Keizai.[22]

Her 2026 book Eregansu nyūmon (An Introduction to Elegance) was reviewed in the Yomiuri Shimbun by Naotaka Kimizuka, a scholar of British royal history.[23]

Nakano is consulted as an expert commentator by international media; in November 2025, FashionNetwork, describing her as a "fashion historian and visiting professor at Aoyama Gakuin University", quoted her analysis of the Tokyo Stock Exchange listing of the streetwear brand Human Made.[24]
