Kapil Aggarwal (born 11 June 1972) is an Indian architect based in New Delhi. He is the founder of Spaces Architects@ka and is known for his work in heritage conservation, adaptive reuse, and socially driven design projects. His notable works include the restoration of Haveli Dharampura, Golden Haveli, and the development of the Charti Lal Goel Heritage Park in Old Delhi.[1][2][3]
Early life and education
Aggarwal was born in Lucknow, India, on 11 June 1972. He completed his schooling at Delhi Public School and graduated with a Bachelor of Architecture degree from the Manipal Institute of Technology (MIT), Manipal, in 1996.[4] Interested in fine arts from an early age, he saw architecture as an extension of artistic practice. His early experiments in furniture design shaped his detail-oriented approach, which later evolved into a narrative-driven architectural style.
Career
Early career
After graduating, Aggarwal worked with architectural firms in India. In 2000, he co-founded Spaces Architects. In 2012, he established his independent practice under the name Spaces Architects @ ka.[5]
Heritage conservation and adaptive reuse
Aggarwal is known for restoration and adaptive reuse projects in Delhi:
- Haveli Dharampura: A 200-year-old haveli in Chandni Chowk restored over six years, transforming it into a heritage hotel. The project received recognition from UNESCO for its contribution to conservation and adaptive reuse.[6][7]
- Charti Lal Goel Heritage Park: A four-acre urban renewal project opposite the Red Fort. Once a dumping ground, it was converted into a landscaped public park. It was inaugurated in 2022 by then-President Ram Nath Kovind and received the IIA Award (2022) and the LOOP Design Award (2023).[8]
- Golden Haveli: Restored in 2023 and inaugurated by External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar. The project integrated heritage preservation with contemporary hospitality functions.[9][10][11]
- Lahori Gate Museum: Ongoing restoration project to transform the Lahori Gate in Old Delhi into a museum showcasing the cultural and social history of Chandni Chowk.[12][13][14]
Socially driven design
Aggarwal has worked on socially oriented projects. Aadharshila Vatika, a kindergarten school for children from underserved backgrounds, was awarded a Merit Award at the Design Share Awards (2008) and was featured by the BBC as one of the world’s notable school designs.[15]
Writing and curation
Aggarwal curated Timeless Houses, a book featuring contemporary homes by architects from India, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh. The book is considered a reference on South Asian residential architecture.[16][17]
Recognition
Aggarwal’s work has been featured in Indian and international publications. In 2014, he was included in Architectural Digest’s list of 50 Most Influential People in Architecture.[18] He has received multiple awards from the World Architecture Community, Indian Institute of Architects (IIA), Institute of Indian Interior Designers (IIID), NDTV Design & Architecture Awards, and Forbes India Design Awards.[19]
