Kapildui (rarely in Script error: The function "langx" does not exist.) is a mountain in Bernedo, Álava, in the Basque Country of Spain. The highest mountain of the Montes de Vitoria[2] and Izki Natural Park,[3] it is located on a branch of the main range which encloses the valley of Okina by the east.[4] The summit is crowned by a weather radar built in 2005 and operated by Euskalmet.[5]
Kapildui can be reached by a hike from Okina, Hijona or Arluzea.[6] There is also a service road to the summit, but access to it is restricted as it travels through Berrozi, a training ground for the Ertzaintza.[7]
Weather radar
More than 230 locations were initially considered for the construction of a weather radar by Euskalmet. The number of potential locations was reduced to five after excluding summits without road access or connections to the electrical grid. It was inaugurated by Juan José Ibarretxe in 2005.[7] The construction of a wind farm in nearby Azazeta is expected to affect the operation of the radar. As a consequence, in 2023 the Basque Government announced its intentions to build an auxiliary radar at a yet to be determined location.[8][9] While the planned service life of the radar ends in 2025 (twenty years after its construction), the government intends to keep it in operation past that date.[5]
