Karen Denise Morgan, Ph.D is the senior vice president for academic affairs at Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, North Carolina.[1]. She is the recipient of numerous awards, including being named the 2020 Honoree of the Network of Mathematical Sciences Mathematically Gifted & Black[2].
Early life and education
Dr. Morgan was born in Texas, the oldest girl in a family of ten siblings. She was raised in Arkansas and Mississippi. As a child, her curiosity on how things work spurred her to deconstruct several household appliances[2]. In high school, she discovered a love of mathematics that led her to the University of Mississippi, where she earned bachelor's and master's degrees in mathematics, and a Ph.D. in mathematics education.
Research and career
Dr. Morgan began her teaching career in August 1994 as an Instructor at the University of Mississippi. After seven years, she moved in September 2001 to Montclair State University, where she was an Assistant Professor of Mathematics. In September 2005, she moved to New Jersey City University as an Assistant Professor of Mathematics. In September 2011, she was promoted to Associate Professor of Mathematics. In January 2015, she was appointed Assistant Provost; and in July 2017 she was appointed Assistant Provost for Academic Experience[2]. In April 2020, Dr. Morgan was appointed as the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs at Johnson C. Smith University[3]
Dr. Morgan's work centers around the intersection of mathematics, literature and the social sciences. Her research interests include examining mathematics anxiety through student poetry, and the connection between memories of mathematics and student retention and success. Her teaching philosophy is to marry mathematics, philosophy and the social sciences to create alternate forms of assessment that produce measurable learning outcomes[2][4].
In Dr. Morgan's words, "The profundity of progressive possibilities permeates the very essence of my being. Tell me it can’t be done; I will tell you it just hasn’t been done yet"[2].
