Karen Shaw Becker (born May 22, 1971) is a veterinarian, and New York Time best-selling author of The Forever Dog.[1].

Veterinary Career[edit]

Dr. Becker has been a practicing Veterinarian since 1997.

In 2015 she co-founded the Companion Animal Nutrition and Wellness Institute (CANWI) with board-certified veterinary nutritionist Dr. Donna Raditic to fund independent, unbiased, university-based small animal nutrition research.

In addition to her active practice Becker is the most-followed[2] veterinarian on social media, including Facebook, with a combined reach of over 2 million fans from Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

In 2018, Becker was the first veterinarian to give a TEDx talk on species appropriate nutrition[3].

She is a vocal advocacy of feeding animals minimally processed diets, as well as her outspoken criticism of feeding pets kibble or pelleted diets and other highly refined foods has led to some pet food industry controversy[4].

While much or her time is now devoted to writing and education through social media Becker currently maintains veterinary licenses in Illinois, Arizona and Nova Scotia, Canada.

Publications and Media[edit]

In 2011, she co-wrote a self-published pet cookbook, Real Food for Healthy Pets.

In 2016, she was one of the featured veterinarians promoting fresh pet food in the controversial documentary Pet Fooled.

In 2017, she and social media influencer Rodney Habib produced a six-hour documentary, The Dog Cancer Series, which investigated the use of a ketogenic diet as an adjunctive therapy in managing aggressive canine neoplasia.

In 2021, The Forever Dog (Harper Wave), a book she co-authored with Rodney Habib, was a #1 New York Times Best Seller[5] and has been translated into twelve languages.

Becker has also been featured on multiple podcasts including Better Together[6] with Maria Menounos, Jillian Michaels Keeping it Real[5], and The Dr. Gundry Podcast[7]

Becker has written for and been featured in a variety of magazines and news outlets including the Huffington Post[8], CBC News[9], ABC News [1], The New York Post[10], AARP[9], Publishers Weekly[11], Readers Digest [12]and many other online pet health platforms. In 2019, a collection of her wellness-oriented educational content was featured in a nationally distributed magazine, The Essential Dog.

Dr. Becker servers as the Chief Wellness Veterinarian Consultant for online pet health resource and retailer Mercola.com where her advice and pet health articles, and podcast are published.

Additionally she serves as an independent consultant for a variety of pet food and wellness companies including chewy.com, rawbistro.com, and raisedright.com among others.

Early Life and Education[edit]

Karen Shaw Becker was born in Waterloo, Iowa, and grew up in Cedar Falls, Iowa.

She graduated from Northern University High School in 1989. In 1990 she completed a raptor rehabilitation internship at the Raptor Center of Pueblo, Colorado. She interned at the Berlin Zoo in 1992. She graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, WI (B.S.) in 1993, which has a well-recognized College of Natural Resources. She graduated from the Iowa State College of Veterinary Medicine in 1997
