Karrar Al-Azzawi (born 1st April 1994 in Baghdad, Iraq) is an Iraqi-Norwegian film director and cinematographer. He studied film directing in Norway.[1] He is known for his documentary films, which focus on human rights and political affairs in the Middle East and their effects on interpersonal relationships.

Personal life[edit]

Al-Azzawi was born and raised in Baghdad, Iraq. In 2016, he fled Iraq to Greece where he lived in refugee camps for more than a year. Afterward, he got to Norway and starting a new life.[2]

Al-Azzawi is unmarried and does not have children.

Education and career[edit]

He started his career in a tent in a refugee camp in Greece where he made his first short film Just Crumbs, which was screened at The Norwegian Documentary film festival and Independent Iraqi Film Festival.[3][1]As well as making Forgotten[4] a photography exhibitions in Norway and in several European countries, highlighting the refugee crisis in the refugee camps in Greece.[5][6][7]

His first job in Norway was as a freelance photo journalist for Vikebladet Vestposten Newspaper.[8] He studied at The Norwegian TV School.[9] During his graduate studies, he created many short films, one of his student films is Faking Mind, which has been screened at Nordic Docs Documentary film festival [10] and Movies on War Film Festival[11], and other film festivals in Europe.

He is known for his latest film Baghdad on Fire which was a co-produciton with Al Jazeera.[12] The short version of the film was shown at Al Jazeera and Aftenposten.[13] The film was premiered at Slamdance Film Festival and Big Sky Documentary Film Festival[14][15] as well as several festivals in Europe and Canada.

The feature length version of the film is at the last stage of production and will be finished soon.
