Kathleen McCormack Durst (born June 15, 1952)[1] is a missing woman who was last seen on January 31, 1982.[2] Her nickname was "Kathy".

Disappearance[edit]

Kathleen McCormack Durst was a student in her fourth year at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in The Bronx and was only a few months short of earning her degree.[3] On January 31, 1982, Kathleen left a house in Connecticut where she was attending a dinner party with friends. Later that night when she unexpectedly arrived at the house of her best friend, the friend noticed that Durst was upset and was wearing red sweatpants, which was odd since Kathleen had often dressed in much better quality clothing. Kathy told her friend that she had gotten a call from her husband Robert Durst at about 7:00pm, and had gotten into an argument with him.[4] During the evening, Kathleen told her friend that her marriage was failing. She also told her that she was going to a cottage that she and her husband owned that was located in South Salem, New York. She left her friend's house, the last time that she was seen. Kathleen was supposed to meet her friend at a pub called The Lion's Gate in downtown New York City but failed to show up, and when this happened her friend became concerned, called the police, and kept calling them for several days straight when she could not find Kathleen. Days later, Robert Durst filed a missing person's report as well. A doorman at one of the two Manhattan apartments where Robert and Kathleen lived claimed to have seen Kathleen there on Feb 1, which was one day after she was last seen, but also claimed that he had seen her only from behind and couldn't be 100% sure that it was her. He also said that Kathleen's husband Robert had thrown away most of the things that had belonged to Kathleen, which Robert claimed was not true. Kathleen's friend and sister broke into Kathleen's cottage on the same week, hoping to find her. They didn't find her and found Kathleen's mail that had not yet been opened, and that the place had been tampered with as things were scattered around and in odd places. They then became afraid and left. Her family claims that only a few weeks before Kathleen vanished, she was assaulted by her husband and taken to the hospital due to the injuries that she had suffered, yet she did not press charges over this.

Investigation[edit]

After Kathleen first went missing, the police said that her husband had told them that the last time he had spoken to her was when she called him by phone while she was in Manhattan and while he was at their family cottage. He also said that the last time he had seen her was at Katona train station,[5] where she was planning to board a 21.15 train to travel to Manhattan. He also said that on February 4, the supervisor at her medical school had called him and said that during the entire week she had not shown up for class even once. The supervisor also said that the last that he had heard from her was on February 1, after she called to say that she was sick and couldn't show up for class that day. People are not certain if this was indeed Kathleen who had called. The day after her husband received this phone call, he reported Kathy as missing. The police find Durst's stories to be full of contradictions.

Aftermath[edit]

The McCormack family now wants Kathleen declared dead as they strongly believe she is deceased.[6] Kathleen's mother Ann McCormack had before attempted to sue Robert Durst for $100 Million.[7][8] Her parents are both now deceased.[9] Kathleen's younger sister Mary McCormack Hughes also believes that Robert Durst killed Kathleen.[10] Durst is a convicted killer, as 18 years after Kathleen disappeared he killed Susan Berman.[11]
