Kathmandu Stadium
Kathmandu Stadium (Nepali[1]: काठमाडौँ रंगशाला) also known as Dasarath Rangasala Stadium[2] is a multi-purpose stadium of Nepal. It is one of the biggest stadiums in Nepal. Kathmandu Stadium was first inaugurated and built in 1956 during the period of Late King Mahendra [3]. It was opened in 1958. It is governed by ANFA. Most of the international tournaments are held in Kathmandu Stadium. It mainly serves as a football ground but lately it has been serving big events such as concerts and exhibitions.
Area
Kathmandu Stadium is open terrace on three sides; it used to have a capacity of 30,000 spectators. But during the renovation it was gradually decreased to 25,000, 18,000 and the recent Earthquake of 2015 in Nepal made it to 15,000.
Tragedy
In March 1988 about 30,000 football fans were present during the match between the Nepali club and Bangladeshi club. The weather suddenly changed and started to hail storms, wind speed went to 50 mph and resulted in the uprooting of trees in different areas of Kathmandu valley. During the hailstorm people surged towards the only cover in the VIP arena but were beaten by the police. As a result, 93 people died including a 12-year-old boy. It is one of the worst catastrophes in the history of sports[4].
