Catherine Ronan Herzog (born May 18, 1983)[1][2] is an American journalist who worked as a staff writer for The Stranger from 2017 to 2020. She is also known for hosting the podcast Blocked and Reported with Jesse Singal.

Early life[edit]

Herzog was born in Asheville, North Carolina.[3] Her father is Hal Herzog, a professor of psychology at Western Carolina University. She graduated from the University of North Carolina at Asheville with a B.A. in English literature.[4][5]

Career[edit]

Herzog worked as a staff writer for The Stranger in Seattle, Washington beginning in 2017, having previously freelanced for the publication.[6] She was laid off from The Stranger in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.[7][8] Herzog's articles have also appeared in Salon, Mother Jones, BuzzFeed News, The Guardian, The Atlantic, and Slate. She is also a former staff writer of Grist.[9]

In 2017, Herzog wrote an article titled "The Detransitioners" for The Stranger, in which she reported on people who reversed or halted gender transition.[10][11] Shortly after publication, she began to receive hate mail. Seattle residents burned copies of The Stranger in addition to distributing stickers that labeled Herzog as a transphobe, and Herzog was ostracized by friends. The New York Times and The New Republic described the reaction to "The Detransitioners" as an example of cancel culture.[12][13]

Personal life[edit]

Herzog identifies as lesbian.[14] She currently lives in Washington.[15] In 2020, she signed "A Letter on Justice and Open Debate" for Harper's Magazine alongside Blocked and Reported co-host Jesse Singal.
