Kathryn (Kay) Hoflander (March 13, 1947) is an American author, journalist, business owner and conservative political leader.  She is best known for her columns and writings on the experiences of the Baby Boomer generation, often using satire and humor to reflect upon this time period. Her style has been compared to Erma Bombeck.[1]

Hoflander’s book, Musings of a Baby Boomer, Life before X, Y, and Z, is a collection of selected columns published in the daily newspaper The Examiner [INCLUDE HYPERLINK TO THE EXAMINER JACKSON COUNTY] between 2005 and 2012.

Early life and Education

A sixth-generation native of Missouri, Hoflander grew up in Mound City, Missouri and has lived in Higginsville, Missouri for over 40 years. She graduated from the University of Missouri in 1969 with a Bachelor of Journalism degree in news-editorial.

Career

Hoflander has worked over the years as a daily newspaper reporter and editor, free-lance writer and publisher of a biweekly newspaper.[2]

In 1969, Hoflander started her career in journalism at The Examiner newspaper in Independence, Missouri in 1969 where she served as reporter and editor until 1972.

From 1972 to 1974, Hoflander was a writer at Valley Hope, Inc. She was hired as “ghost writer” for the clinical director’s book, Walk Through the Valley, 1975, Independence Press (a division of Herald Publishing), Independence, MO.

From 1977 to 1979, Hoflander was the information specialist, at the College of Engineering at University of Missouri-Columbia Communications Office, where she edited and wrote the college’s first Engineering Research Review book, 1979, University Press, Columbia, MO.[3]

From 1980 to 1982, Hoflander was the owner and publisher of The Penny Post, a weekly newspaper in Boonville, Missouri. She oversaw all newspaper operations until the paper was bought out by The Boonville Daily News.

Since 1982, Hoflander has served as vice president and co-owner of Hoflander Ford, Inc. a Ford dealership located in Higginsville.

Author and Columnist

Hoflander has published three books.

Hoflander was a weekly columnist for The Examiner from 2005 to 2012. Her column was called “Full Circle” and focused on reluctant aging of Baby Boomers.[6]

Personal Life

Kay and her husband, Harold, live in rural Missouri and are the parents of five children and grandparents to ten grandchildren.

Electoral Politics and Conservative Advocacy

In 1990, Hoflander served as mayor of Higginsville, Missouri. Previously she served on the Higginsville Board of Aldermen from 1984-1990. She also chaired the city personnel and administration committee and was chairwoman of the Higginsville Police Board.

Hoflander is a fixture in the Missouri Republican Party. In 2019, she was elected as chair of the state party where she served until 2021. The year of her election marked the first time in history both major political parties in Missouri were led by women.

She was a Republican Delegate to the 2012, 2016 and 2020 RNC Conventions, and Alternate Delegate to the 2008 RNC Convention.[7] [8]

Before being elected chair of the Missouri Republican Party, Hoflander served as vice chairman of the state party. Additionally, she has served as chairman of the Lafayette County Republican Central Committee since 2004, and as a State Republican Committeewoman since 2014.[9]
