Elizabeth "Kay" Warren (born Elizabeth Kay Lewis on February 9, 1954)[1] is an American author, speaker, Bible teacher and a global advocate for mental health, suicide prevention, HIV/AIDS, and orphans & vulnerable children. Along with her husband Rick Warren she is the Co-Founder of Saddleback Church, an evangelical megachurch located in Lake Forest, CA, with several campuses around the world.

Career[edit]

Warren became a global advocate for suicide prevention and people living with mental illness when her son, Matthew, took his life on April 5, 2013.[2] Warren serves as an Executive Committee Board Member for the National Action Alliance for Suicide Prevention[3] and founded the Hope for Mental Health Initiative at Saddleback Church.[4] Kay also founded the HIV/AIDS[5] and Orphan Care[6] Initiatives at Saddleback Church. Known for her advocacy for people living with HIV & AIDS and orphaned children, a journey she shares about in her book Say Yes to God,[7] Warren has traveled the world training pastors and calling on the faith community to respond together with prevention, treatment and care.[8][9] Guest speakers at these events have included President Barack Obama[10] (Senator at time of event), President George W. Bush, President Paul Kagame of Rwanda, First Lady Laura Bush, First Daughter Jenna Bush,[11] Senators Hillary Clinton,[12] John McCain,[13] and Sam Brownback,[14] Bono, Ambassador Mark Dybul U.S. Global AIDS coordinator,[15] Dr. Peter Piot Director of UNAIDS, Dr. Robert Redfield Director of the CDC, Wess Stafford of Compassion International, and Sammy Mah of World Relief.

Detailing with transparency her own marital struggles in her book Sacred Privilege,[16] Kay speaks at faith gatherings and conferences for pastors' wives and women serving in Christian ministry offering hope and encouragement through her story.

Kay has authored three books, Say Yes to God (Originally released as Dangerous Surrender), Choose Joy, and Sacred Privilege and co-authored Foundations: Core Truths to Build Your Life On with Tom Holladay, who is an author and Teaching Pastor at Saddleback Church.[17]

She was named on the Orange County Register's 100 Most Influential list in 2016.[18]

Early Life and Education[edit]

Born in San Diego, CA, she was raised in California by her father and mother with her younger brother, Andrew Lewis.[19] Kay's father was a minister.[20] In 1976, she earned her Bachelor's Degree from California State University, Los Angeles.[21]

Personal[edit]

Kay married Rick Warren in 1975 and has 3 children, Amy, Josh and Matthew. Their youngest son, Matthew, lived with mental illness from a young age and took his life in 2013. Kay became a global advocate for suicide prevention and mental health after his passing.[22]
