The Kazakh massacre (Kazakh: Қазақ қырғыны) was a massacre of the Kazakh people in 1771 during the Kyrgyz-Kazakh war, during which about 20,000 Kazakhs were massacred by North Kyrgyz tribes.
Kochkor massacre
In the second half of the 18th century, a conflict broke out between the Kyrgyz and Kazakhs, which grew into a war. In 1771, the Sultan of the Kazakh Middle Zhuz Kokzhal-Barak made a campaign against the Kyrgyz and reached the Kochkor valley. The Kyrgyz, under the leadership of Esengul-baatyr, defeated their entire army and killed 17,000 of their soldiers, finishing off the survivors and cutting the heads of the prisoners and killing Kokzhal-Barak with particular cruelty.
Background
Sadyr - leader of Kaba-Sayak (Kyrgyz tribe), with the help of Solto leader Jaiyl, ousted the Kazakh tribes from the lower reaches of Talas.[2] Kazakhs, in turn, penetrated into the territory belonging to the Sarybagysh tribe on the left bank of the Ili, where Uch-Almaty was a Kyrgyz nomad center. This campaign was actively led by Kazakh heroes Berdi-Hoja from the Shanyshqyly tribe, Kooman, Jabek, Qashyke and Daulet from Shapyrashty, Tulekabyl and Jaysan from Botbay clan, Maldybay and Konushbay clan from Kashkarau. During the clashes, the Kazakh side lost several heroes, and after that, Berdikojo and Jabek went to Tole dance in Janishka.[3] After that, they arrived in the area of Azirettin Karatoosu and asked Ablai Khan for help. Not convinced by Ablai, the hero went to Kökjar-Baraq.[4] In 1771 Baraq, who enthusiastically accepted the call of heroes, was brave and went on a campaign against the Kyrgyz. But this campaign did not have the desired result and ended with the defeat of Baraq in the Kochkor Valley. Pursuing the remnants of the powerful Baraq, the Kyrgyz reached the Ili Valley, defeating the nomads of Uly Zhüz.[5] After the defeat of the hero Baraq, the Kazakh biys, apparently, once again turned to Ablai Khan. On this occasion, serviceman I. Abdulov in October 9, 1771 informs the West Siberian authorities of the following: "...I heard that the Kazakhs are bringing the mourning of the Ablai Sultan to the independent Kyrgyz, who last defeated the Great Kazakh Horde in the Balanai Volost and killed seventeen thousand Kazakhs,[6] and the Ablai Sultan said that he intends to go to war with those wild Kyrgyz now or this winter"[7] But the intentions of Ablai Khan did not come true due to the refusal to send Russian troops to him for the war with the Kyrgyz. Only in 1774, according to a Chinese source, the campaign of Ablai and Abulfeisa against the Kyrgyz took place. In the battle of Kara-Balta Atake, the hero, having suffered a defeat, retreated to Talas.[8] Apparently, after this, Ablai Khan returned to his native nomads, waiting for the recognition of the Khan's power by Russia.
