Kees (Leo Cornelis) Vlaardingerbroek (Ermelo, Netherlands, 9 June 1962) is a Dutch musicologist, artistic director of the NTR ZaterdagMatinee (the Saturday afternoon concert series in the the Royal Concertgebouw in Amsterdam), as well as of the other concert series of the Netherlands Public Broadcasting Company (Nederlandse Publieke Omroep (organization), the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra (Radio Filharmonisch Orkest) and the Netherlands Radio Choir (Groot Omroepkoor).
Life and work[edit]
Kees Vlaardingerbroek earned his doctoral degree in musicology at Utrecht University in 1986. In addition to his specialization, he studied art history, Italian and philosophy. In 1986-1987 he was a Researcher at ‘Collegio dei Fiamminghi’ in Bologna (Italy).
He worked as a music journalist and translator from Italian, French, English and German into Dutch, wrote for the magazines Vrij Nederland
and Luister, among others, and was part of the editorial team of Mens en Melodie. In addition, he was a music critic for a few years for the daily newspaper Het Parool. Research into Italian and Dutch music history resulted in scientific articles in Music & Letters, Studi vivaldiani and Recercare, among others.
After working as a radio programmer and editor at Omroepvereniging VARA-Matinee (now known as NTR ZaterdagMatinee) (1990-1996), Kees Vlaardingerbroek was a programmer-producer of classical music concerts for AVRO broadcasting company (1996-1998). In the period 1998-2006, he was attached as Head of Programming and Artistic Manager to de Doelen Concert and Conference Hall in Rotterdam. There he was responsible for some 250 concerts that de Doelen organises annually under its own management; he himself programmed the approximately 150 classical music concerts a year.
Since 1 March 2006, Kees Vlaardingerbroek has been Artistic Director of the NTR ZaterdagMatinee,
the Saturday afternoon concert series at the Royal Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, and of the other Concert Series of the Netherlands Public Broadcasting Company (Nederlandse Publieke Omroep, NPO). The concerts are broadcast directly via Radio 4 (Netherlands). About one quarter of the Matinee concerts are recorded and broadcast on television by the NTR.
In August 2013, the department of Living Music of Radio 4 (NTR and AVROTROS) and the orchestra and choir of the Music Centre for Broadcasting (Muziekcentrum van de Omroep, MCO) were combined into the Broadcast Music Foundation (Stichting Omroep Muziek, SOM). Since then, Kees Vlaardingerbroek has been the Artistic Director of this organisation. His existing position has thus been expanded to include the artistic responsibility for the Netherlands Radio Choir and the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra.
