Keithgate was a scandal in the United Kingdom involving various parties at Wiltshire College & University Centre in Trowbridge, Wiltshire concerning allegations of misconduct by lecturer Keith Seward on the Level 2 Creative Media Production and Technology course, as well as other incidents related to staff that led to some students not enjoying their time on the course.
The scandal started on 19 September 2025 following classroom incidents that led to complaints from students and a so-called "internal investigation" by college management. It formally ended after 49 days on 7 November when Seward left midway through a session without explanation, however, further dissatisfaction with a handful of his replacements meant the scandal didn't officially end until 26 June 2026, when the sixth term came to an end.
Background
Keith Seward is a company director at Compass Video Limited, a corporate video and photography production company based in Frome, Somerset, and has served as director since September 2016.[1] Compass Video has produced videos for companies like EasyJet, TEDx, the National Health Service (NHS), to name a few. Compass Video primarily produce corporate media videos and content. According to it's filing history on the UK government's Companies House agency, it was officially incorporated on 16 July 2016, with Seward being appointed company director seven weeks later.
As early as October 2018, Seward began taking up a part-time lecturing post at Wiltshire College, although it is unsure which campuses he was attending as Wiltshire College has four of them, although an article from the same month said he began lecturing on both the Creative Media, TV and Film Diploma and the Games Development Diploma.[2] By July 2020, Seward held 75% of Compass Video shares, up from "more than 25% but not more than 50% of the shares" that was filed in July 2018, according to Companies House.
Additionally by December 2025, according to a balance sheet, Compass Video's overall value dropped from £8,795 in 2024 to just £1,199 in 2025 which is primarily due to short-term bills and debts (£247 in total current assets and prepayment), leaving them with "net current liabilities" of £8,889, suggesting a shrinking net worth.[3] However, Compass Video is a small company and in compliance with section 477 of the Companies Act 2006, they aren't required to hire an independent auditer to do a check of their financial accounts.[4] But, since Proft and Loss statements aren't legally available to the public from small companies, it's hard to tell how well they're doing since balance sheets don't show revenue or operating expenses.
Controversy
Pre-scandal
Matty Groves had been a lecturer on the Creative Media course at Wiltshire College since at least September 2023, focusing on Film & TV in particular. At some point in mid 2025, Groves announced that he would be leaving his post in October and would be moving to Bristol to teach there. Notably, he mentioned that Keith Seward would begin teaching lessons on Fridays only starting in September and considering the students didn't know who Seward was at the time, nobody knew what to expect.
September 2025; beginning of tensions
Seward began teaching the course on 12 September 2024, which isn't where the scandal begins as nothing notable happened during that session.
Seward's relationship with the students dipped into the black beginning on 19 September, wherein a brief confrontation occurred between him and student Benjamin Bodie. Seward reportedly instructed Bodie to "get off your arse and move your chair", an instruction based on a belief that moving office chairs with one's feet may cause long-term back problems. However, Bodie's friends and other students considered such an outburst as ridiculous, noting that other lecturers had never raised such concerns, no less ask aggressively not to do it.
This continues a week later on 26 September, where Seward reportedly shouted at the entire class "SHUT UP!", in spite of students settling quietly, yet another sign that Seward wouldn't be like any other lecturer the students had encountered. In the same lesson, Seward had set a task revolving around PowerPoint presentations pitching various British products. A notable moment took place in which Seward asked student Molly Staffer to "explain why [your pitch] was good and his was shit", a remark aimed at fellow student Charlie Crook, who had made a pitch for HP Sauce that wasn't up to Seward's standards. Staffer described the comment as "uncalled for" and "rude", particularly towards Crook.
October 2025; unannounced absence
Three weeks later, Seward does not attend class due to filming commitments with Compass Video. Many students note that Seward never notified them of his absence via Microsoft Teams, leaving Wiltshire College's deputy head of creative arts Jen Shutt to inform them and to partially cover the lesson as well as the following week's lesson. In retrospective, some students note that Shutt lacked the knowledge of their course to "teach" in the traditional sense, instead leaving them to do tasks on their own accord.
Six days later, Bodie and Staffer have a private conversation with media lecturer Jamie England. He expresses his frustrations about the college's changing environment since September. Although he reportedly didn't make references to Seward, his remarks apparently were interpreted as critical of Seward's behaviour. England also notes how the college had been relying on Century Tech, an AI-based learning platform used in Maths and English [5], likely to do with the ongoing distrust of artificial intelligence.
The following Friday, Seward fails to return for a second week and, rather suspiciously, remains offline on Teams, leading to speculation that he only attended the college on Friday, indicating a lack of enthusiasm for the course and indeed the students.
November 2025; complaints and subsequent investigation
On 6 November, student Georgia Harvey told students that England had privately contacted her and told her that any complaints regarding Seward should be forwarded to him. Harvey notes and reports, although a specific date of this incident is unspecified, an earlier incident in which Seward allegedly put his arm around the back of her chair and tapped her on the side of the head whilst assessing her work. She described the behaviour as "weird".
The following day, Seward returns to teach at around 09:00. He mounts a lesson based around shooting a coffee advert whilst not moving the camera, but because of Seward's reputation, many don't shoot an advert or indeed keep the camera still, possibly as an act of defiance. However, when a majority of students return to the classroom at around 11:00, two hours into the lesson, Seward is nowhere to be found. Fellow student Eesa Rahman reports having seen Seward leave the college in his car with a "blank expression". A unnamed staff member enters and informs them that an internal investigation would be taking place regarding allegations that had been submitted to England. Students then teach themselves and complete practice presentations on their auteur theory, which many considered more important than Seward's lessons.
Three days later, no further information is confirmed regarding Seward or the investigation, but many assume, and correctly, that he won't be teaching the upcoming Friday lesson due to this investigation. Two days later, Shutt confirms this to Bodie, Staffer and fellow students Brooke Jones and Thomas Weston, stating that she will act as temporary instructor until further notice. They note that Seward has not been active on Teams since his departure five days earlier, possibly due to senior staff removing him from teaching duties due to the aforementioned allegations.
December 2025; insight by Staffer in interview
By December, an internal staff member contacted Staffer and invited her to an interview regarding statements that were reportedly made by Seward, which followed a month of an internal investigation revolving around interviews with staff members and, as of that month, students. Not much is actually publically known about this investigation, although Staffer recalled what happened in an interview.
According to her, an unnamed staff member relayed that Seward had reportedly told head of faculty Owain Milford that he had infact apologised to the class for his behaviour. However, Staffer, Bodie and Weston denied that such an apology was given, suspecting that Seward had possibly deliberately misinterpreted events to skew the investigation in his favour. Not much else is known, but Staffer did raise these concerns to the interviewer, who subsequently thanked her for the clarification.
