Kellen Curry (born January 1, 1986) is an American Air Force veteran, former banker, and political candidate. He served two tours in Afghanistan before becoming a vice president at JP Morgan. Curry gained attention for becoming the first Republican primary challenger to George Santos for the 2024 election in New York's 3rd congressional district.

Education, military service, and career

Curry was born in Oklahoma. His father, John, was a naval officer and his mother, Celeste, was a civil servant.[1] He grew up with his parents and four sisters. Curry graduated from Carl Albert High School in his hometown of Midwest City, Oklahoma.[2]

Curry attended the United States Air Force Academy and was a member of their football and track and field teams.[2] He graduated in 2009.[3] Curry served two tours of duty in Afghanistan with the Air Force.[4] In his eight years active in the service, he was primarily involved in cybersecurity technology[5] as a procurement officer.[1]

Following his service in the military, he earned a Master of Business Administration from George Washington University.[4] He moved to New York in 2019.[1] As of 2023, Curry was a member of the Air Force Reserves and was in the process of obtaining a master's degree in sport management from Columbia University.[4]

Curry was a vice president at JP Morgan,[6] working in the corporate and investment banking division[4] as an equities research analyst.[7] While in this role, he lived in Long Island City in Queens.[1] In his campaign announcement, Curry said that he quit this job to run for Congress.[8][7]

Politics

Curry became George Santos' first Republican primary challenger in April 2023,[9] running in New York's 3rd congressional district, which Santos currently represents.[10]

He says he was inspired to run for Congress against Santos after it was revealed by multiple news sources that much of Santos' background, including his education and work history, were fabricated.[1] He has called Santos "the most ineffective member of Congress".[3] He has also cited Joe Biden's withdrawal from Afghanistan as part of the reason he jumped into the race, calling the withdrawal "disastrous".[11]

Curry has voiced support for a proposed bill from Ritchie Torres that would require those running for office to disclose key parts of their personal background under oath.[1] When asked by the Washington Post about fact-checking regarding his past, Curry said he "welcomes the scrutiny".[12]

Aside from mentioning Santos in his campaign, Curry has also mentioned resident concerns over crime and national security issues as top priorities.[13] He has also publicly supported term limits on members of Congress.[14] He has described himself as a "kitchen table Republican".[7] Curry has decried the January 6 United States Capitol attack that Santos was involved in.[15]
