Kellymoss is an American-based organization best known for its Porsche racing team and custom Porsche builds.
Kellymoss is currently competing in the IMSA Porsche Carrera Cup North America (PCCNA), Porsche Sprint Challenge North America (PSCNA), IMSA SportsCar Championship, and IMSA VP Racing SportsCar Challenge series. Formed in 1988, the organization has also competed in various other types of racing such as the Firestone Firehawk Endurance Series, SCCA World Challenge, and Porsche Club Racing.
Kellymoss later expanded from racing into Porsche project builds, including popular off-road, Safari Porsche builds. In 2017, they took a SEMA show car off-road into the Las Vegas desert, allowing photographer Larry Chen and other members of the automotive press an opportunity to drive the car.[1] Some of the Kellymoss Safari builds would later go on to be featured on The Hoonigans. [2]
Kellymoss is co-owned by Andy Kilcoyne and Victoria Thomas. In addition to its racing team, Kellymoss has an in-house engine shop, carbon fiber shop, interior and graphics departments, road shop, engine and chassis dynos, professional racing sim, and custom project division.
History
Kelly-Moss Motorsports was formed in 1988 by Rich Moskalik and his wife Kathy Kellogg, owners of a boutique car dealership, Euro Imports, and David Stone, GM at Euro Imports. The trio saw a number of Porsche race cars come into their shop for service, and saw an opportunity to transition from a service shop into a Porsche Racing team.[3]
1989
KMM made their competition debut at the IMSA Firestone Firehawk race at Road Atlanta in 1989. The driver pairing of Kyle and Tom Rathbun won the race for KMM on debut.[4]
1990–1992 IMSA Firestone Firehawk Endurance Series
Kellymoss won the 1990 Firehawk Championship with Rich Moskalik and Jeff Purner driving. After winning in 1990 with their home-brewed Porsche 944 S2’s, the Porsche factory built 7 special S2’s that became known as the “Super 7”, based on the details of the KMM built S2.[5]
In 1991 KMM finished 2nd in the Championship, missing first place by just a few points to the Charlie Cook led team of drivers: Mark Sandridge and Joe Varde, who had moved from their stalwart Chevy Camaros of previous years to a Porsche 944 S2.
Between the 1991 and 1992 seasons, Kelly-Moss moved operations to Madison, Wisconsin, where the team remains to this day.
1992 would be a successful season for KMM, winning 8 of 10 races that year and finishing second in the other two.
1993 – Bridgestone SuperCar Series
For 1993, Kelly Moss would switch to the Bridgestone SuperCar Series. By this time, Porsche AG and Porsche Motorsports North America (PMNA) had taken notice of the KMM group. In previous seasons, Porsche had given some sporadic help in ways of parts and technology to KMM, however this year would be a step up in involvement from Porsche. Porsche wanted Kelly Moss to collaborate with the more established Brumos Racing team of Jacksonville, Florida, who would be running Hans-Joachim Stuck and Hurley Haywood in a pair of 911 Turbos that season. Off the success of the 1992 season, Porsche supplied two 911 Turbos to KMM. 1993 did not prove to be a good season for KMM, having DNF’d (Did Not Finish) in 8 of 10 races.
1994 – SCCA World Challenge Pro Racing
KMM continued in 1994 with two Porsche-supplied 911 Turbos and factory support, facing competition from other factory efforts by the likes of Corvette, Nissan, BMW, etc. At the same time, Brumos was running two Porsches in the IMSA Series. KMM worked closely with Brumos and Porsche in order to ensure compatibility and interchangeability between their cars. New chassis were built in-house at KMM, before being sent to PMNA in Santa Ana, California to be matched with the two Brumos cars. For the 1994 season, 24 Hours of Le Mans-winner Price Cobb and ex-Formula 1 driver Mauro Baldi would drive for the team. Kelly Moss would go on to win the 1994 World Challenge Championship. Price Cobb was the first American driver, and KMM was the first American team to win the Porsche Cup.[6]
1995–present
1995 led to big changes for KMM. The Porsche factory was gearing up for the new Porsche AG operated GT1 Program, which meant no more factory funding or support for independent teams. Following the end of Porsche factory support, KMM would shift focus to “Arrive and Drive” customer racing.
In 2021, Kelly Moss joined forces with fellow Madison, Wisconsin-based Porsche specialists Accumoto. The partnership will see the continued development and preservation of vintage Porsches.[7]
In 2022, Kelly Moss hosted a shootout for female drivers, with the winner securing a full-season drive in the Porsche Carrera Cup North America in 2023. The shootout was won by ex-W Series driver, Sabré Cook.[8]
Today, Kelly Moss prepares race cars for amateur racers with the resources to own Porsche cars for the track, but not the time, expertise, or inclination to maintain or modify them to be able to run a racing program. Kelly Moss additionally provides full service, maintenance, transportation, hospitality, and coaching support for their racing customers.
Kellymoss operates out of an 80,000 square foot facility based in Madison, Wisconsin. Their facility is complete with an in-house engine shop, carbon fiber shop, interior & graphics departments, road shop, engine and chassis dynos, professional racing sim, along with custom project and racing divisions.
Husband and wife team Andy Kilcoyne (engineer & designer) and Victoria Thomas (finance & marketing), became co-owners of the corporation in 2020, and in early 2022 purchased the balance of the stock from Jeff Stone Sr. who remains involved in sponsorship for the company.[9]
Kellymoss is currently home to more than 100, primarily Porsche centric, working projects and actively campaigning over 20 race cars and supporting clients across multiple series.
In 2023 Kellymoss rebranded the corporation to align with with expansion in the Porsche community.
2023 will see further expansion, as Kellymoss partners with Riley Motorsports to advance into GTD racing with a 2 car effort, one of which will be piloted by David Brule Sr., Alec Udell, Andrew Davis, and Jeroen Bleekemolen, as well as another entry piloted Kay van Berlo, Alan Metni, Julien Andlauer, and Jaxon Evans.[10] [11]
