Kelm Pond (Kehl-m) is a small, naturally occurring lake located in Chestertown, New York, and the Kelm Pond body is an associated narrow, long rock formation. They lie in the eastern Adirondack Mountains. It is accessible only via a private highway and is located several miles north of Warrensburg, New York on US Route 9. Kelm Pond is listed as a part of Chestertown according to census data, and has a seasonal population of around 35.

Features of Kelm Pond[edit]

Kelm Pond is roughly 2,100 ft. in length from its Northern to Southern shore. Its width is estimated at nearly a quarter of a mile at its maximum.

In August 2014, researchers Taylor Haines, M.S. (SUNY Buffalo State College) and Jeron Zieger, B.S. (Clarkson University) charted the depth of the pond, taking measurements at several points.[citation needed]

  • At its southern terminus, the pond only reaches 20-25 feet. The bottom of the pond is composed mostly of weeds, downed trees and other naturally occurring debris.
  • The deepest charted part of the pond was 75 feet, found at the base of the "Big Rock" geological formation which sits in the center of the pond.
  • The average depth of the pond was 25 feet across all points measured
  • Kelm Pond offers two different beachheads, abundant with sand and other typical Adirondack soil compositions. Both beaches are private and not open to the public.
  • Kelm Pond also connects to two smaller ponds, Gould Pond to the Northeast and Mud Pond to the South (Featured on the right)

The associated Kelm Pond body is a magmatic sill, i.e. it formed as a tabular sheet intrusion between sedimentary or other rock layers. It is ultramafic (high in silica content), and among such, is Aluminum-rich.[1]
