Ken Buhler

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Ken Buhler (b. 1955, Iowa) is an American contemporary artist working in painting, drawing and printmaking. He has been awarded fellowships from The National Endowment for the Arts and The New York Foundation for the Arts. He lives and works in Brooklyn and Masonville, New York.

Education and career[edit]

Buhler received a MFA from Indiana University Bloomington and a BFA from the University of Iowa. Roberta Smith, in reviewing one of Buhler's early exhibitions for the New York Times, wrote "Ken Buhler's paintings, seen in his one-man show, are beautifully made and distinguished by an ambition to reduce nature to a state of luminous abstraction. Mr. Buhler specializes in fields of glowing color punctuated by gentle patterns of repeating spheres, ellipses, stripes and zigzags [...]"[1] In merging colorful abstraction with recognizable imagery, Buhler's early work drew comparisons to that of Milton Avery, Bill Jenson and Ralph Humphrey.[2]

Nature, antiquity and language have remained constant themes in Buhler’s works, which he often explores with an emphasis on process .[3] Working with a variety of techniques and materials that include washes, staining, sugar lift etching, stencils and rubber stamps, the pieces formally reflect the artist's interest in both botanical and decorative forms. A trip to the Northwest coast of Ireland in 2007 shifted Buhler's interest towards notions of landscape when he encountered "an isolated landscape that suddenly meets the sea..." [4] This encounter spurred the creation of the series Notes From the Edge of the World (2008-2010) which garnered him a NYFA Fellowship.

His solo exhibitions include shows at Lesley Heller Gallery, O'Hara Gallery, Michael Walls Gallery, and the Marianna Kistler Beach Museum of Art. In recent years he has worked on print projects with Jungle Press of Brooklyn, VanDeb Editions of NYC, and Oehme Graphics of Steamboat Springs, Colorado.

Buhler is currently artist-in-residence at Bard College, where he has also taught since 2000.

Buhler received a fellowship from The National Endowment for the Arts in painting (1987) and two fellowships from The New York Foundation for the Arts (1994, 2009).
