Ken D'Andrea
Kenneth Paul 'Ken' D'Andrea (born October 1, 1966)[1] is an American businessman and Republican Party politician, currently serving as the deputy mayor of Evesham Township, New Jersey and Republican party leader in New Jersey heading Burlington County faction.[2]
D'Andrea is a lifelong resident of Evesham Township/Marlton, New Jersey. Prior to serving as deputy mayor, he served on the Marlton Recreation Council from 2008 to 2016. He is a co-founder of Evesham Celebrations Foundation, a non-profit and non-partisan organization that organizes township holiday events for families.[3] He spearheaded an initiative called Evesham Saving Lives, which partners businesses that serve alcohol with Uber rides.
Early life
Ken D'Andrea was born to Marlton residents Americo M. (Henry) 'Hank' and Angela 'Dolli' D'Andrea who lived in the Brush Hollow neighborhood. His father, Hank, is a Camden-born former councilman and former head of the New Jersey chapter of Sons of Italy.[4] During his tenure on council, he aided in creating the Gibson House, an event space on the grounds of Indian Springs Golf Course.[5] His mother, Dolli, is a former middle school secretary at Voorhees Middle School[6] While a student at Cherokee High School, Ken created the senior final exemption policy. Until the school's elimination of final exams, seniors with an 'A' average up until final exams were not required to complete class finals. He graduated as valedictorian of Cherokee High School (New Jersey) in 1984.[1]
Education
In 1988, Ken graduated from Lehigh University with a Bachelor's in Science degree in electrical and electronics engineering.[1] His first foray into politics was when he created the student senate and oversaw the forum restructure.[7] He furthered his education by attending the University of Pennsylvania and earned a Master's degree in Organizational Dynamics in 1991.[8]
Business career
Ken was an employee of Verizon Communications from 2000 until 2014. He was primarily stationed in offices in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. He utilized his engineering mindset in managing call centers in 170 locations covering 7 lines of businesses and successfully completing 17 cutovers.[9] D'Andrea was the first non-hospital employee in the leadership of Virtua, a Southern New Jersey hospital system. One of his tasks was editing the 'Virtua Star Initiative'; this is five points of customer service emphasizing good 'bedside manners' and overall safety.[10]
Political career
D'Andrea began his career as the township's youngest member on planning board, an approval process for businesses looking to gain location in Marlton.[11] In 2000, he began his first campaign for mayor which ended in 2005. Before his later tenure on township council, Ken served as soccer commissioner, treasurer, and later president of the Marlton Recreation Council. Ken firmly believes that his role on council is to nurture transparency and communications for the residents of Marlton. The town has been consistently ranked in the top 25 towns of South Jersey for the last three years.[12] Political party affiliations should not take precedent – rather, "is there police protection?" and "are tax dollars spent wisely?"[13] In 2007, Kenneth co-founded Evesham Celebrations Foundation, a non-profit and non-partisan organization that sponsors holiday events in town; the first and landmark event being the annual Fourth of July parade and corresponding fireworks at Cherokee High School.[14] D'Andrea was also a vital figure in creating Evesham Saving Lives, a transportation service partnership with Uber, where Evesham residents get free transportation from any bar and restaurant during the evening hours. Local police department has reported 0 DUIs since 2009 when this program began.[15] As a result of this effort, the program has since spread to Medford and other surrounding townships.[16]
Marlton Recreation Council
Marlton Recreation Council is a nonprofit and non-partisan organization separate from township council and Evesham Celebrations Foundation. Sixteen sports and programs are offered – with the largest being Marlton Soccer. The program is part of the beneficiaries of the major sports complexes in Marlton: The Diamonds at Arrowhead Park, Memorial Sports Complex, and Cherokee High School Turf Field. Marlton Soccer is one of the largest soccer program in New Jersey. During his presidency, the soccer program became the largest sport encompassing more than 5,000 current children. He also brought in trainers from Global Premier Soccer to aid in the township's travel soccer program.[17]
Evesham Celebrations Foundation
In 2007, D'Andrea and colleagues including Monica Vandenberg, deputy township manager, originated the Evesham Celebrations Foundation. This organization is a nonprofit funding township events with donations and funds generated for appearances by local businesses and schools in the Fourth of July Parade, Harvest Festival, Taste of Evesham, and Winter Festival[11]
