Early life and career[edit]
Ken Fulk was born in 1966[3] in Harrisonburg, Virginia,[4] to restaurant owner parents.[5] His first venture was in a textile company that he started with a friend. Fulk later went on to author children's books. In 1994, he moved to San Francisco along with his husband, Kurt Wootton. [6]
Fulk began his design career in home staging and quickly moved to interior design, architecture, and event planning. [7] In 1997[8], Ken founded the eponymously-named design firm, Ken Fulk Ltd.
Fulk has designed several iconic buildings, including The Battery,[9] a five-level private social club that drew international attention when it opened in 2013.[10] He designed the Saint Joseph’s Arts Society,[11] The Harrison[12] and Leo’s Oyster Bar[13] in San Francisco, Henry Hall[14] in New York, and The Goodtime Hotel[15] in Miami, among others.
With a design philosophy described as outlandish, irreverent, and sometimes whimsical,[16] Fulk counts several notable people among his clientele, including Yelp co-founder Jeremy Stoppelman, Zynga founder Mark Pincus, Napster and Facebook creator Sean Parker,[16] Instagram founder Kevin Systrom,[17] singer and songwriter Pharrell Williams,[18] among others.
In 1999, Fulk co-authored and published 6 children's books with Chronicle Books called Doodlezoo.[19] In 2016, Abrams Books published Fulk’s book titled Mr. Ken Fulk's Magical World, which showcases some of his best work as an interior designer and an event planner. In 2022, Fulk published his newest book Ken Fulk: The Movie in My Mind, with Assouline Publishing, which gives insights into some of his most notable works. [20][21]
Fulk’s expertise in curating special events became popular through some of the events he planned. Notable among them are Facebook creator Sean Parker’s wedding at Big Sur,[22] and the event planned on behalf of Sean Parker for the members of the 2013 World Economic Forum at Davos, Switzerland.[23]
Fulk’s design firm has been on Elle Decor’s A-List since 2016.[24] In 2021, Fulk’s studio was included in Luxe interior’s Gold List,[25] and In 2022, his studio was named in Architectural Digest’s AD 100.[26] He has also been nominated twice for the James Beard Design Award.[27]
In popular culture[edit]
Dubbed by Introspective magazine as a “Master of Maximalism,” Fulk in 2007 purchased a former leather factory in downtown San Francisco and turned it into his office/design studio/ living area, calling it the Magic Factory, as an homage to Andy Warhol’s The Factory.[28] As of October 2022, the designer has listed the iconic property for sale.[29]
