Kenjiro Kawanabe (1931-1922) remains one of the great Shotokan karate masters of Japan who learned his art directly under Gichen Funakoshi, the man who originally brought Karate from Okinawa. [1] He was born in Atugi-Cho, Japan. [1]
Kawanabe insists that the origins of karate owes much from the samurai who emphasized unifying the mind with the body. [2]
Philosophy As Kawanabe aged, he continued to improve his skills and was very articulate about how others can also improve. To understand how power is generated in a karate, the key is to learn how to practice Oi-zuki, or the lung punch well. Indeed, Kawanabe explains that the entire body moves as the punch is created with special attention to the waste and the breath. If done properly, the ki or energy flows dynamically. [3]
Legacy Finally, the style of Hachiriki (eight powers) karate became his gift to the world to demonstrate how ki, breathing, and inner power combine to be whip out like tornado. [4] The American representative of Kawanabe Hachiriki Karate remains Eli Curiel, Jr. [5]
