Education[edit]
Elliott graduated from the University of Virginia with a B.A. in Media Studies and Italian in 2005.[1] She went on to pursue her graduate studies at Northwestern University, earning a master’s degree from the Kellogg School of Management and Medill School of Journalism. She initially planned to study the infrastructure of newsrooms, but found herself more interested in data visualization.[2]
Career[edit]
Elliott’s work focuses on front-end web development, using using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, applying a human-centered approach to data visualization.[3][4][5] She also uses Node.js, R, and Python for data processing and analysis.
After graduating, she moved to New York to report, design, and develop informational graphics and data visualizations for the Associated Press, the Guardian US, and The Washington Post.[6] In 2013, she moved to Washington, D.C., teaching programming to journalists in Northwestern’s DC bureau. During her time at The Washington Post, Elliott’s work focused on merging national news and politics with graphics, partaking in several Pulitzer Prize winning reporting projects. Most notably, she was part of the team that won a Pulitzer Prize for National Reporting in 2016 for creating a national database of police shootings in America.[7][8]
