Kenneth Tetteh Akiti
Kenneth Tetteh Akiti is a Ghanaian electrical and electronics engineer, researcher, and inventor whose work encompasses embedded systems, magnetic-field measurement, and battery energy storage technologies. He is a doctoral researcher at Edith Cowan University in Western Australia, where his research focuses on the reuse of retired electric mining vehicle batteries in stationary energy storage applications.[1][2]
In 2025, Akiti was awarded the Odwyn Jones PhD Scholarship by the Minerals Research Institute of Western Australia (MRIWA) for research into the responsible management of retired mining vehicle batteries.[2] He is also a named co-inventor of a patented optical-pumping-based magnetic-field measurement device.[3]
Early life and education
Akiti was born in Ghana and attended Presbyterian Boys' Senior High School in Accra, where he studied General Science and joined the robotics club.
He studied Electronics and Communication Engineering at All Nations University in Koforidua, Ghana, graduating with a Bachelor of Engineering degree with First Class Honours in 2017.
He subsequently studied at Zhejiang University of Science and Technology in Hangzhou, China, where he obtained a master's degree in Intelligent Manufacturing and Control Engineering. His postgraduate work included research on laser stabilization and magnetic-field measurement systems.[3][4]
Akiti later enrolled in a doctoral programme in Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Edith Cowan University in Perth, Australia. His doctoral research concerns battery management, optimization, and the repurposing of retired electric vehicle batteries for secondary energy storage applications.[1][2]
Engineering career
Akiti has worked in embedded systems engineering, electronic circuit design, and autonomous systems development.
During his early career in Ghana, he worked at Syngle Electronics Bay, where his engineering activities included microcontroller-based systems, electronic prototyping, and embedded hardware development.
He subsequently worked at Robsense Technology in Hangzhou, China, developing embedded systems for unmanned aerial vehicles and related control technologies.
His professional and research interests include microcontroller programming, autonomous systems, electronic instrumentation, and energy storage system design.
ResearchMagnetic-field measurement and instrumentation
During his postgraduate studies in China, Akiti participated in research involving atomic magnetometers and optical instrumentation.
He co-authored the 2022 paper "A kilohertz bandwidth and sensitive scalar atomic magnetometer using an optical multipass cell", published in the journal "Measurement". The study investigated a scalar atomic magnetometer designed to achieve high measurement bandwidth and sensitivity through an optical multipass cell.[4]
Akiti is also listed as a co-inventor of United States patent US11486945B1, "Device and method for measuring scalar magnetic field based on pulsed optical pumping", granted on 1 November 2022. The patent describes an optical-pumping-based system for measuring magnetic fields.[3]
Second-life battery systems
At Edith Cowan University, Akiti's doctoral research examines the technical challenges associated with reusing retired batteries from electrically powered mining vehicles.
The project, titled "Responsible management of retired mining vehicle batteries to address environmental and economic challenges", investigates methods of repurposing batteries for stationary battery energy storage systems.[2]
His research includes predictive modelling, battery-cell performance assessment, and dynamic reconfiguration of electrical connections within battery packs. These approaches are intended to address cell heterogeneity, performance degradation, and the operational limitations of conventional fixed-configuration battery systems.
The project has potential applications in renewable energy integration and energy storage for mining operations and remote communities.[2]
In 2026, Akiti and colleagues authored "Switching configurations for reconfigurable battery packs: A review", a study examining switching architectures used in reconfigurable battery systems, including their complexity, fault tolerance, and implementation characteristics.[5]
Awards and recognition
In 2025, Akiti received the MRIWA Odwyn Jones PhD Scholarship, supporting his research at Edith Cowan University.
The award and associated research project were documented in the Minerals Research Institute of Western Australia's 2024–25 annual report, which identified his project as part of the institute's research and workforce development programme.[2]
Akiti was also featured among the researchers presenting at MRIWA's 2025 scholarship programme events.[6]
