Kenneth Binmoeller, M.D., is a medical doctor and author of multiple scientific contributions and over 300 publications[1][2], as well as the inventor of the lumen-apposing metal stent (LAMS)[3] and AXIOS System.[4] These are medical devices used to relieve blockages while creating a direct connection between two bodily structures. He practices in the field of Gastroenterology with a specialty of Advanced Endoscopic Intervention.[5] Binmoeller has been published for his innovations in medical devices and training in the field of Endoscopy.[3][6]

Education and training

Binmoeller studied Medicine at the Albert Ludwigs University[7] and graduated in 1983 before attending the University of Bern in Switzerland. He completed his Residency in Internal Medicine at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, and completed a Fellowship in Gastroenterology at the Oregon Health & Science University in Portland.[8][6][9][10]

Binmoeller is certified in gastroenterology and internal medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine.[11]

He has been certified to practice in the states of:

Career

Binmoeller was affiliated with the California Pacific Medical Center (CPMC) in San Francisco, CA. His work in the field of endoscopic procedures is amongst the presentations of the New Frontiers Course, held annually.[15]

Binmoeller has been performing procedures in the field of interventional endoscopy since the 1980s.[16][17][18] Throughout his career as a Medical Specialist, he has also held appointments at a number of universities. These include:

  • Nice, France at the CHR Cimiez: 1990 to 1991
  • Hamburg, Germany at the University Hospital Eppendorf in Hamburg: 1991 to 1998
  • San Diego, USA at the UCSD Medical Center: 1998 to 2001[19][13][20]

In 2001, Binmoeller founded the Interventional Endoscopy Services (IES) at the CPMC. This center was the first founded and directed by Binmoeller with the main aim being the advancement of therapeutic endoscopy practices. [21]

He has collaborated with multiple device manufacturers in an effort to improve existing products. He is also the founder of several medical device start-ups:

  1. Advent - Offered a treatment for GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease).[22]
  2. Endeau - Where techniques and devices were developed for underwater endoscopic procedures.[23]
  3. Endosphere - Was responsible for multiple patents that enable the psychological treatment of metabolic diseases and obesity. Binmoeller is the Inventor of the Satisphere™ duodenal implant[24] under this startup, a device that has undergone clinical trials.[25][26]
  4. KB Solutions Inc. - Where the novel endoscopic tissue closure device was developed.
  5. Xlumena - Founded by Binmoeller in 2004 with a portfolio of EUS guided translumenal therapy inventions.[13]

Binmoeller is owner of over 100 Endoscopic Technology patents.[27][28] His first patent was filed in 1998 for an endosonography guided tissue sampling device.[29] Development and global commercialization was assigned to the Olympus Medical Corporation, which brought the NA-11J-KB Powershot[30] needle to market. He is the inventor of the Lumen-Apposing Metal Stent (LAMS). His work on this was published in the Lumen-Apposing Stents, An Issue of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Clinics, book.[31][32][33]

International Scholars Program (ISP)

ISP has mentored and trained multiple endoscopists from all across the globe and launched a postgraduate program, The International Scholars Program in Advanced Endoscopy, in 2002 in Collaboration with Sutter Health and California Pacific Medical Center. [34][35]

Non-Profit

The Endovision Foundation was Founded by Binmoeller in 2015 in San Francisco, California[36][37]

The AXIOS System

Binmoeller invented the AXIOS system for advanced interventional endoscopy. This comprises the AXIOS Stent and a cautery-enabled access catheter to provide an Electrocautery Enhanced Delivery System. The system allows an endoscopist to access walled-off necrosis and symptomatic pancreatic pseudocysts by means of a transduodenal or a trans gastric approach to then place the AXIOS stent.[38]

This was the first system of its kind in the United States and is currently the only minimally invasive approach that entirely streamlines the process.[39]

Xlumena acquired by Boston Scientific

In April of 2015, Xlumena was acquired by Boston Scientific[40] when they agreed to pay $62.5 million with an additional $12.5 million for sales-based milestones[41][42] upon FDA clearance of HOT AXIOS[43], to go alongside the AXIOS Delivery System[44], which had already received FDA clearance[45] as the world’s first stent designed specifically for Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS) guided transluminal drainage of symptomatic pancreatic pseudocysts.[46][47][48]
