Kenneth Petty is an American convicted sex offender. He is the husband of Trinidadian-American rapper Nicki Minaj.
Early Life[edit]
Kenneth Petty was raised in South Jamaica, Queens.[2]
Legal issues[edit]
At 16 years old, in 1994, according to court documents, Kenneth Petty pressed an object to the back of Jennifer Hough and demanded her to continue walking. After the two arrived at Petty’s home, he forced her up the stairs of his house and began to rape her at knife-point. Hough then struck him with a bottle to escape.[2] Kenneth Petty was convicted of first-degree attempted rape, unlawful imprisonment, and second degree assault in 1995.[2][3] He was sentenced to 18 to 54 months in prison, and served four years.[4] Petty is a level two registered sex offender in the state of New York.[4] In 2021, Jennifer Hough said on The Real that an associate of Petty and rapper Nicki Minaj went to her residence and offered $20,000 in exchange for a recanting of her sexual assault accusations. After Hough declined the offer, she alleged that a message from the associate claimed that she "should've taken the money because they [were] going to put that money on [her] head".[5]
Petty pleaded guilty to manslaughter charges in 2006, with original reports claiming that Petty was responsible for shooting Lamont Robinson.[2]
In August 2021, Jennifer Hough filed a lawsuit against Nicki Minaj and Kenneth Petty alleging that the couple attempted to threaten her into recanting her accusations of sexual assault (witness intimidation, intentional infliction of emotional distress, negligent infliction of emotional distress, harassment, assault, battery, sexual assault, and sexual harassment).[6] In January 2022, Jennifer Hough dropped the harassment lawsuit she had filed against Nicki Minaj, although the case against Petty is still ongoing.[4]
In November 2019, Kenneth Petty was arrested in Beverly Hills after authorities learned that he failed to disclose his sex offender status after moving from New York to California. He was released on $20,000 bail.[7] In March 2020, Kenneth Petty was arrested for failing to register as a sex offender in the state of California. Petty initially plead "not guilty",[8] but later entered a plea deal on September 9, 2021, and faces a maximum of ten years in prison.[9] Prosecutors are seeking a fifteen-month sentence in prison followed by five years of supervised release.[10][11]
Personal life[edit]
Petty entered a relationship with Nicki Minaj in December 2018. In October 2019, the couple got married.[12] Minaj gave birth to her's and Petty's first child in September 2020.[13]
