African Science Academy
The African Science Academy is an all-girls Advanced level school founded in August, 2016. The school was founded by Tom Ilube, the founder and chairman of The African Gifted Foundation. The school is located in Tema, Ghana with students coming from all over Africa. Countries that have been represented so far are Ghana, Nigeria, Uganda, Kenya, Cameroon, Ethiopia, Sierra Leone and Zimbabwe.[1]
History
The school started in August, 2016. The founder Tom Ilube knowing the impact of science and technology on the world, was inspired to explore how it could drive Africa's development through its own female scientists.He believed that a young gifted African girl if given the right resources and training can cause a change in the world.[2][3]
- 2016: The first cohort had 24 girls representing Ghana, Nigeria, Uganda, Sierra Leone and Cameroon.
- 2017: A student from the first cohort, Ibukun Aribilola, had the best results for the CIE Advanced level in Mathematics and Further Mathematics in Ghana.[4][5]
- 2017: The second cohort had 22 girls with some coming from Kenya and Zimbabwe.
Meaning Of School Logo
The school logo is hexagonal in purple and violet colour. It is hexagonal because of the significance of hexagons as in Graphene, benzene, honeycomb, polygons and tessellations. The colours of the logo were chosen because they are rare in nature and they represent privilege and power and are the most powerful wavelength in a rainbow.
Curriculum
African Science Academy prepares students to achieve Cambridge International Advanced Level Qualification within a single year[6]. All students study Advanced Level Mathematics, Further Mathematics and Physics.
Extracurricular Activities
The school includes in its curriculum a wide range of activities. These activities are programming, guest speaker series, career sessions and sports. There are also a variety of clubs where students are trained and they can also exhibit their talents.This includes:
- Dancing club
- Reading and Debating Club
- Wikimedia club
- The choir
- Cool Creatives
- Innovation Club
- Robotics
- Yoga
- Keep fit club
Campus
Students reside on campus. They have access to a library and casual areas for students to relax and study.The campus runs on both solar and hydroelectric power. Students are grouped into four houses, having their significance from the colours in the flag of Ghana and precious stones with the same colour.

Recognition
In 2017, CNN shared the story of African Science Academy on Inside Africa. The video tells the vision and mission of the school.[7] The school is also a member of the Partner Schools Global Network.

- Dr Mamphela Ramphele, Patron
She is a South African academic, businesswoman, medical doctor and was a leading anti-apartheid activist.
- Dr Tom Ilube CBE, Founder and Chair
Tom Ilube CBE is Founder and Chair of the African Gifted Foundation, which has opened the African Science Academy for gifted and talented young women.

He is the Nigerian President/CEO of the Africa Finance Corporation (AFC).

He is Director of Centre for African Development Research and Education (CADRE), a charity registered NGO created in 2001, which focuses on capacity building, education and research projects in Africa.
