Formatting Text in Wiki Markup

This guide helps you format text using wiki markup in MediaWiki. Wiki markup uses normal characters like asterisks, apostrophes, or equal signs for special functions. For example, to format a word in italic, use two pairs of apostrophes like this.

Character (Inline) Formatting

- Italic text is achieved by surrounding the word with two apostrophes like this. - Bold text is achieved by surrounding the word with three apostrophes like this. - Bold and italic is achieved using five apostrophes like this.

Escape Wiki Markup

Use no [[wiki]] ''markup'' to escape wiki markup.

Section Formatting

Use equal signs to create different levels of section headings:

- == Level 2 == - === Level 3 === - ==== Level 4 ==== - ===== Level 5 ===== - ====== Level 6 ======

Skip Level 1 as it is the page name level. Do not put any text on the same line after the ending equal signs. An article with 4 or more headings automatically creates a table of contents (unless setting the magic word ).

Horizontal Rule

Use four dashes (----) to create a horizontal rule.

Lists

- Bullet list: Start each line with an asterisk (*). More asterisks create deeper levels. - Numbered list: Start each line with a number sign (#). More number signs create deeper levels. - Definition list: Use a semicolon (;) followed by a colon (:).

Indent Text

Use colons (:) to indent text: - : Single indent - :: Double indent - ::::: Multiple indent

Mixture of Different Types of List

Combine different list types by mixing the symbols:

  1. one
  2. two
    • two point one
    • two point two
  3. three
    three item one
    three def one
  4. four
    four def one
    this looks like a continuation
    and is often used
    instead
    of <br>
  5. five
    1. five sub 1
      1. five sub 1 sub 1
    2. five sub 2

Preformatted Text

Start each line with a space to create preformatted text. Markups can still be done within preformatted text.

HTML Tags

Some HTML tags are allowed in MediaWiki, such as ,

, and .

Inserting Symbols

Insert symbols and special characters using HTML character references. For example: - The rightwards arrow symbol (→) can be displayed using →. - An em dash (—) can be displayed using —.
