Anis, is an Indian filmmaker who predominantly works in Tamil cinema. He made his debut as a director in the film Thirumanam Enum Nikkah 2014.
Career
Anis graduated his B.A in Tamil Literature from The American College, Madurai and further did his M.A, MPhil Drama and Theatre Arts in Pondicherry University. He is currently pursuing his PhD in Film and Theatre Studies at Tamil Nadu Open University. His works as an academician includes; as a Cultural Coordinator in Loyola College, as a theatre tutor in Centre for Vocational Advance Training - TVS Management, as a Lecturer in Pondicherry University and as Visiting Faculty for VisCom Department in Sathyabama University and at BOFTA Film and Television Institute. He has a vast experience of nearly 20 years in Film and Theatre. He has written and directed many plays and has conducted many workshops collaborating with the National School of Drama (NSD), The American College and Sathyabama University and so on. Some of his plays includes; ‘Eni’, ‘Shri Part’, ‘Neelavelicham’, ‘Hasiyakarargal’ etc. He has also worked on Children’s Theatre and has directed plays like ‘Aruntha Vaal’, ‘Tale of Tails’, ‘Many Moon’ at Kids Centre, Abacus School and Chettinad Vidyashram. On the other hand, he has also been working on movies parallelly. He had worked on movies like ‘Mayan’, ‘Popcorn’ and ‘Sun Sun Thatha’ associating veteran actor and director Mr. Nasser. He has also done short films and documentary films for social causes. He then debuted as a director with his movie Thirumanam Ennum Nikkah in 2014 produced by Aascar Films Pvt. Ltd. He has also trained many actors in the industry and has collaborated with leading television channels in auditioning actors for Tamil drama soap operas. For the first time in Tamil Nadu, he initiated theatre therapy for inmates of Puzhal Prison. Through an organization called Prison Theatre, he had directed a play called Hasiyakarargal which was performed by the inmates of Puzhal Prison. He also conducted script and music workshops for them inside Puzhal Prison. A group of released inmates are formed as a music band called ‘Sirai Gaana’ and has been performing at many occasions under his guidance. He is doing his PhD research on the topic ‘A study on the therapeutic value of theatre in prison’. Anis is currently aiming to take Prison Theatre all around India to reform prisoners using theatre therapy.
