Butting Group (/ˈbʊtɪŋ/, de), is a German manufacturer and developer of longitudinally welded pipes and pipe components made of stainless steel and clad materials.[2] In July 2025, Butting announced the establishment of its North American headquarters and first U.S. production facility in Loxley, Alabama.[3][4]
History
The company was founded in 1777 in Crossen an der Oder as a coppersmith's workshop.[5] Under Hermann Butting (1852–1925), the craft business developed into an industrial enterprise in 1890. In 1912, the business was transferred to Hermann's son, the engineer Hanns Butting (1882–1966).[6] From 1916 onwards, the company operated as a metal goods factory.[7] Before and during the First World War, the company produced and traded copper and brass pipes, rods, wires, and sheets, serving both civilian and military needs.[8] In 1930, Hanns Butting was appointed to the supervisory board of the Niederlausitzer Bank, where he served until 1942.[9] As the original company site was located in the Eastern territories of Germany, it had to be abandoned at the end of the Second World War. The company was re-established in Knesebeck in 1945. Pipe production started in 1949 with 16 employees. In 1955, Dr. Hannshermann Butting (born 1925 - 2000) took over and developed the company into an internationally active manufacturer and processor of stainless steel pipes and components. By 1960, the workforce had grown to 120 employees, and by 1970 to more than 300. Shortly after German reunification, a second site was established in 1991 in Schwedt/Oder, which later evolved into today's Butting Anlagenbau GmbH & Co. KG.[10] Since 2000, the family business has been managed by Hermann Butting (born 1964) in the seventh generation. In 2003, the workforce surpassed 1,000 employees. In 2004, Butting China was founded in Tieling as the first foreign site,[11] followed by Butting Canada in Calgary in 2005 and Butting Brasil in 2009.[12] In 2017, Butting acquired the stainless steel pipe manufacturer Sosta in Könnern and has operated it since December 2021 under the name Butting Könnern GmbH.[13] In 2019, two additional companies were established in China: Butting International Engineering (Hong Kong) and Butting Engineering Management (Beijing). In the same year, the non-destructive testing specialist Hillger NDT GmbH based in Braunschweig was integrated into the Butting Group .[14] In July 2020, the company acquired Textoris GmbH in Düren, active in plant and pipeline construction.[15] In 2021, Schwanner GmbH in Burgkirchen an der Alz, a specialist in vacuum-insulated transfer lines, joined the group and has been operating since 2023 as Butting CryoTech GmbH.[16] Through these new locations and acquisitions, the workforce has continuously expanded in recent years. By January 2022, the group employed around 1,980 people, and by 2023 approximately 2,500. In the same year, the Butting Group achieved revenues of €863 million.[17] At the beginning of 2025, PrePipe Oy in Lappeenranta, Finland, an international provider of pipe prefabrication and installation services, was acquired and integrated into the Butting Group.[18] Butting Plant Engineering was founded at the beginning of 2025. Butting's engineering office is based in Oberursel.[19]
