Derek Hansen (London, 1944) is a novelist and short story writer.[1] He is the author of the 1993 best-selling Lunch With The Generals, Amazon Best Sellers Rank: #8.[2] Hansen is known for his four book Lunch with... Series.
He was born in England, raised in New Zealand.[3] He now lives in Sydney, Australia.[4] Derek Hansen's works have been published in the USA, United Kingdom, Europe and China. He is married, and has two adult children.
He published his first short story at the age of 16 The Albertian, the magazine of his secondary school, Mount Albert Grammar School.[3] At age 20 Hansen moved to London to work for J. Walter Thompson, and went on to run his own advertising agency. By his own account, he didn't consider writing fiction for twenty years, but then his mate Bryce Courtney published The Power of One and, at the book launch, leaned forward and said to Hansen, "You owe me a book." in a voice loud enough for the room to hear. Courtney, who wanted Hansen to write a book about his New Zealand boyhood, repeated this action at the book launch for Tandia. Hansen sold his ad agency and wrote Lunch with the Generals.[3][5]
Hansen's most popular book, Sole Survivor, draws on his New Zealand childhood and passion for fishing. called it It had gone though 17 printings by 2005.[6] Tim Pankhurst, editor of The Press, describes Hansen's fishing books as "Hansen's fishing books are the ones that get away. Lend them and they won't come back."[6]
