From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Dog Puller is a dog sport created in Chernihiv, Ukraine in August, 2020. It is relatively new sport in comparison to Agility or Disc Dog, but its popularity grows quite fast[1]. As Agility Dog Puller develops the speed and cooperation between dog and handler, it is also similar to Disc Dog, because one of the exercises includes ring throwing and catching. But the main principle of Dog Puller is accessibility. The exercises are deliberately created to let any dogs and people start their training disregarding of their initial fitness, disabilities and dog breed.

The sport is based on the exercises with PULLER — dog fitness tool — Puller Running and Puller Jumping. Today Dog Puller is an international sport. Dog Puller clubs exist all over the world, from Japan to Canada. The Second Dog Puller World Championship was held in 2019, gathering 91 participants from 11 different countries.

History[edit]

Dog Puller started as a set of exercises developed for the dog fitness tool PULLER in August, 2012.

The owner of COLLAR Company that manufactures PULLER tools, Yuriy Sinitsa, arranged a meeting of dog trainer and PULLER inventor, Serhiy Shkot and sportswoman and cynologist Varvara Petrenko. The main idea of the meeting was creating a sport, accessible for any dogs and people. Varvara created the rules for such a sport from scratch — from the disciplines to score calculation — based on the exercises developed by Serhiy.[2]. The creators of the sport claim that the rules of it will still be modified after getting the feedback from the sportspeople and analyzing results of the competitions. The official rules were corrected twice, after the Championships-2018 and 2019 and people, who practice Dog Puller as a hobby are welcomed to add "home rules" and discuss them in their local clubs. The International Dog Puller Federation also thinks about possibility to add water sports to official Dog Puller disciplines (as additional ones to Dog Puller official disciplines or as a separate type of competition).

After several tests and initial corrections of the rules, the first Dog Puller Championship took place in September, 2012[3]. The first participants didn't have special training beforehand, lot of them didn't even know the rules, learning on the spot. That's was the main point of the test championship: to learn if people who never heard about Dog Puller are able to quickly understand the rules and participate in the game with their dogs. Despite the first participants were not trained, the competition was a success and Dog Puller started growing popularity in Ukraine. It became truly renowned from the second half of 2016 and in the 2017 it became obvious that the quantity of the clubs all over the world now allow to hold World Dog Puller Championship, not only local ones. Until the beginning of 2018 the local Dog Puller Federations were created, the rules were standartized for all of them and, in October 2018, the First World Dog Puller Championship finally took place.

Now World Dog Puller Championship are held annually and it is also included to the lists of dog sport disciplines for the other international multi-disciplinary pet competitions such as Animal World Cup.

Accessibility[edit]

The main quality needed for Dog Puller competitions is determination to win[3]. The rest can be adjusted according to the needs of the competing dog-human pair. For example, the categories of dogs allow them to compete within the group of similarly physically developed animals: the heavy dogs such as molossus compete with each other and small dogs like chihuahua have their own league. Pups and senior dogs are also competing separately, as the dogs of Drive category (such as border collies and other fast breeds)[4].

The human competitors can also compete despite any possible disabilities they have. For example, the rules allow people to kneel or sit in Puller Jumping discipline. It is convenient not only for the small dog breeds (who can't jump to catch the ring in the hand of a standing person), but also for people on wheelchairs. The rules also note that each person can have their own technique, based on their (and their dog's) abilities and the referees should respect this[4].

The Dog Puller World Championship-2019 was named an inclusive event[5]: there were one-eyed dog and the owners with diabetes (who also was the youngest participant). The organizers of Dog Puller competitions are ready to adjust the rules to the special needs of the participants to embrace even more diversity at Championship-2020.

Basic exercises and hobby use[edit]

Dog Puller exercises can be practiced both for everyday training and for the competitions. COLLAR Company (the manufacturer of PULLER items that invented the exercises Dog Puller is now based on) claims that 20 minutes of daily exercises provide a full physical and emotional load for dogs. According to their research, such training equals to 5 miles of running [6]. For some breeds the physical activity can be essential for their health, so Dog Puller exercises can be useful not for sport purpose but when the owners don't have time for enough training with their dogs in a traditional way.

The basic exercises that are offered for hobby use are Running, Jumping, Pulling and Swimming. There is a lot of video instructions, feedbacks and a strong online community that allow people to start training even without access to the local club or federation. The instructions for the basic exercises are filmed and shown at the PULLER site

The local championships can include all the four disciplines, but according to the rules of 2020 the dogs will compete in two of them - Running and Jumping - on the Dog Puller World Championship. The techniques may vary: for now the International Dog Puller Federation has approved three Jumping techniques.

Spring pole[edit]

Spring pole is now removed from the disciplines of Dog Puller Championships and stays as a hobby discipline.

Any dog breeds are allowed, the only condition is the age above 12 month and permanent teeth.

Rope (strap or tarpaulin tape) is reliably attached to a steady mount. PULLER Maxi or Standard is attached to the free end of the rope. It should be perpendicular to the ground, so that the dog can hold it. The distance from the ground to PULLER should be enough for dog to catch PULLER by its mouth while standing on the ground with its rear legs.

After «Ready» command, the dog and the handler come to the starting point. The dog can be on a long leash or without a leash.

After «Set» command handler shows dog the way and cheers it up, holding PULLER to not let it swing.

After «Go!» command handler releases the dog. When the dog holds the PULLER, handler releases it. The dog now has to hold tightly.

There are 3 tries. The maximum time for the pair is 90 seconds. When the time runs out, the dog should release the rope (by itself or with the help of the handler).

Puller Running[edit]

Two PULLER rings are used. A handler alternately throws rings in different directions, so the dog catches the rolling ring and brings it back. The time of performance is 90 seconds. The number of throws is not limited.

Resultative throw is a throw performed by handler only from the Start Zone.

Dog can leave Puller on the ground or give it directly to handler in the Start Zone.

If handler managed to throw Puller for the last time before time was over, the point will be scored in case of its correct catching and returning to the Start Zone.

Puller Jumping[edit]

Performance consist of alternate catching of one of the PULLER by dog with taking two or four paws off the ground. During catching Puller must stay in handler’s hand. It can be letting out from hands only after successful catching.

Dog must show clear changing of left/right position of the body when Puller rings are changed.

During the performance dog have to make predominantly horizontal jumps with clearly visible movement toward the Puller.

Handler and dog are not restricted in movement at 10 x 10 meters Zone.

Handler may stand on their knees during performance, but no part of the body can be used as barrier for the dog.

In case of using any part of body as a barrier for dog, referees can provide penalties for such pair: from dividing the total score on 2 to disqualification in this discipline.
