Andrew "Drew" Chicone (born 1979) is an American author, saltwater fly designer, fly fisherman and fly casting instructor.[1][2][3] Chicone writes books and magazine articles demonstrating how to tie saltwater fly patterns primarily focused on warm-water fish and fly fishing from standup paddleboards.[2][4][5]

A number of Chicone's articles with his patterns and fly tying instructions have appeared in fishing and fly tying magazines including USA Today Hunt & Fish[6], Fly Tyer[7], Fly Life Magazine[8] and Salt Water Sportsman[9] among other smaller fly fishing and fly tying magazines.

Chicone is sponsored by Patagonia, CTS Fishing, Dyna-King, and Airflo. He is an ambassador for the American Museum of Fly Fishing[10], a member of the Tarpon and Bonefish Trust, and is said to play an active role in the preservation of local fisheries.[11]

Biography

Early life

Drew Chicone grew up in upstate New York, where he learned how to tie flies at the age of six from his parents.[1][12] Chicone graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in business from Hartrwick College in 2001.

Writing Career

Chicone started his fly tying business in 2008, followed by publishing a monthly email newsletter in 2012 with the desire to "spread the word about new or unique materials, techniques and patterns."[13]

In 2013, Stackpole Books published Chicone's first book, Feather Brain: Developing, Testing, and Improving Saltwater Fly Patterns[14], which received complementary editorial reviews about his methodology which some regard as unique.[1][15] The book provides step-by-step instructions and photos for tying 14 flies that he designed[5]. Feather Brain also received endorsements[16] from industry peers such as Jonny King and the late Eric Leiser.[17]

Most of his later books are self published species-specific guides with instructions and photographs for tying fly designs created by Chicone and other designers or professional fly fishermen, sometimes combined with interviews with the original creator.[4]

Chicone's theory for creating effective fly designs revolve around his self proclaimed study of baitfish habits and movement through the water he attempts to replicate for his designs. Some of his designs have been regarded as effective by industry peers, won industry awards[18][19][20] and been included in a book written by another author.[21] One of his articles was awarded 3rd place by the Outdoor Writers Association of America in their 2014 Excellence in Craft Contest[22].

Chicone's largest book, Top Saltwater Flies (Wild River Press), is a collection of 3 books comprising of a species specific book for bonefish, permit and tarpon. Top Saltwater Flies collection exceeds 900 pages in combination[23] and is reportedly the largest book written on the topic of fly tying, and have their own marketing website.[24]

Other Professional Endeavors

In addition to writing, Chicone operates a website where he sells fly tying materials along with books on fly tying and fly fishing from a standup paddleboard.[12][25] He has invented materials and tools for fly tying which are sold by Hareline Dubbin.

He also works as a fly tying and fly casting instructor[12][25] and has been credited with a casting method called the misdirection cast.[26]

Family

Chicone lives in Fort Myers, Florida with his wife and daughter.[12]
