Ethique (the French word for ethical, pronounced Eh-tique) is a zero-waste beauty and lifestyle brand. All products are created as solid bars and sold in compostable packaging[1]. Headquartered in Christchurch, New Zealand, the company was founded by Brianne West in 2012. It initially traded under the company name, Sorbet, but was rebranded to Ethique in 2015[2].

History[edit]

Brianne West studied science at the University of Canterbury[3]. While studying, she started developing solid products in her home kitchen[4].

In 2012, West began her business under the name of Sorbet, which was rebranded to Ethique in 2015[5].

Business[edit]

Ethique is New Zealand’s highest scoring, certified B Corporation, the fair trade symbol of the business world. Initial certification was achieved in 2015, then recertified with a higher score in 2018[6].

In 2018 and 2019 Ethique received ‘Best in the World Honoree’ status, placing it in the top 10 percent of B Corps internationally[7].

Products[edit]

Ethique sells more than 40 products including shampoo, conditioner, face cleansers and moisturisers, laundry bars and dog wash[8].

Ingredients[edit]

All ingredients and packaging are biodegradable. Ethique bars contain little or no preservatives and are made with natural ingredients like coconut oil, cocoa butter, kiwifruit seed oil and other essential oils[9].

Global[edit]

As of May 2019, Ethique has prevented more than 3.3 million bottles heading to landfill since the company started in 2012[10].

The brand currently ships to 44 countries worldwide[11].

Awards[edit]

  • 2018 Sustainable Business Network Awards, 'Going Circular' category winner and Supreme Award co-runner up[12]
  • 2019 AmCham-DHL Success & Innovation Awards, 'Exporter of the Year to the USA $1 million to $10 million' category winner[13]
  • 2019 Westpac Champion Business Awards, 'ChristchurchNZ Champion Innovation' category winner[14]
  • 2019 Westpac Champion Business Awards, 'Supreme Award, Small Enterprise' winner[15]

Campaigns[edit]

In 2015, Brianne launched an online crowdfunding campaign through PledgeMe, which raised NZD$200,000 and attracted the largest number of female investors in the site's history[16]. The funds were used to generate new packaging and branding, and establish a product development laboratory.

The company undertook another crowdfunding campaign in 2017, raising $500,000 in 90 minutes. The new capital was used to fund expansion in New Zealand, Australia and the United States, improve Ethique’s e-commerce platform and research future products[17]

The company leads a growing movement on social media dubbed #GiveUpTheBottle, which inspires customers worldwide to become bottle-free[18]
