[4]

History[edit]

Exchange[edit]

Bter.com was founded in 2013 by Lin Han, and was rebranded as gate.io in 2017.[5] In 2015, the platformed was hacked, losing 7,000 Bitcoin from its cold wallets. [2] gate.io was initially based in China, but moved to the Cayman Islands due to China's increasing regulation of cryptocurrency.

In 2019, gate.io was ranked the second most secure cryptocurrency exchange in the world.[6] Also in 2019, gate.io raised $64 million for it's decentralized exchange project by selling it's native GateChain Token,[7] followed by the launch of its Startup investment platform which allows users to invest in new cryptocurrency projects.[8] In April 2021, Gate.io Startup projects raised over $165 million in funding.[9]

In 2020, the platform followed competitors in offering cryptocurrency options trading.[10] In January 2021, Gate.io Labs was launched as a startup incubator[11] and in May 2021, gate.io launched NFT Magic Box, an NFT trading platform to its 4 million users.[12]

Cryptocurrencies[edit]

gate.io has its own native GateChain Token and features over 180 different cryptocurrencies and nearly 400 markets.[13] The company also has a startup incubator through it's Gate.io Labs platform.[11]
