Geoffrey M. Young (born June 25, 1956)[2] is a Kentucky Democrat running for the Kentucky's 6th congressional district against Republican Andy Barr in the 2022 election. Young is running on the platform "Abolish the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA)".[3][4][5][1]
In July 2022, Young was added to the list of propagandists by the Center for Countering Disinformation in Ukraine.[6]
Early life and education
Geoff Young was born in Massachusetts, where he graduated from Marblehead High School in 1974.[1][7][8] He then attended Massachusetts Institute of Technology graduating with a bachelor's degree in economics in 1977 and University of Massachusetts-Amherst graduating with a master's degree in mechanical engineering in 1981.[7]
Young moved to Fayette County, Kentucky in 1982 where he attended the University of Kentucky graduating with a master's degree in agricultural economics in 1988.[7][8] In 1976 Young attended political science classes with Noam Chomsky.[1]
Career
Young has worked as an employee of the Kentucky Department for Energy Development and Independence, assistant director of the Kentucky Division of Energy, and as an environmental engineer in the Kentucky Energy and Environment Cabinet.[9][8]
Public service
Young has been affiliated with the Sierra Club, Kentuckians for the Commonwealth, Democratic Socialists of America, and Lexington Friends Meeting (Quakers).[8]
Political career
Young has described himself as someone who "retired and became a full-time political activist and started running for offices in 2012."[7] Young is known for his frequent political feuds with the Kentucky Democratic Party.[10]
His first campaign for office in 2012 was as the Green Party candidate for District 45 of the Kentucky House of Representatives. He lost to Republican Stan Lee.[7][10]
Campaigns for Kentucky's 6th congressional district Democratic Party Nomination
Young previously ran in 2014, 2016, and 2018 in Kentucky's 6th congressional district's Democratic primaries, failing each time to secure the nomination.[7]
Kentucky Gubernatorial Campaigns
Geoff Young was the only Democratic challenger to Jack Conway for Kentucky's 2015 Governor (Gubernatorial) Primary.[11] Young's running mate was Cherokee Schill. He campaigned on "defend[ing] the economic well-being and personal liberties of Kentuckians."[9]
In 2019, Young ran in the 2019 Kentucky gubernatorial election and was reported as one of the "most liberal contenders" in the race. While campaigning, Young stated he would not support Andy Beshear or Adam Edelen if they won the party's nomination for governor.[10][12] His running mate was Josh French.[7]
2020 Republican party switch
Young switched parties to run as a Republican in the 2020 congressional elections in Kentucky's 6th congressional district.[8]
2022 United States House of Representatives elections
Young again ran as for the Democratic nomination in 2022 for Kentucky's 6th congressional district, and this time won the party's nomination.[13] Despite winning the party's nomination, the Kentucky Democratic Party refused to support Young writing "[t]he party cannot actively support a candidate that engages in countless frivolous lawsuits against the party, its officers and virtually every elected official over the past decade." Elected Democrats in Kentucky also refused to endorse or support Young, including Governor Andy Beshear, State Senator Morgan McGarvey, and former state auditor Adam Edelen.[14]
Young's 2022 campaign was criticized by mainstream Democrats for its controversial foreign policy stances including abolishing the Central Intelligence Agency and equating Andy Barr's support of Ukraine during its invasion by Russia to support of Nazis.[14][15]
Political positions
Foreign affairs
Young states that, "The U.S. is by far the worst imperialist country in the world today. And the rest of the world is getting tired of it." He considers the United States's "aggressive foreign policy" and large standing army to be contrary to what the country's founders intended. He has stated that both parties have made Washington and Congress too "warlike", but that "whenever a Democrat proposes cutting the military budget, [the Republican party] opposes the idea". He has said that he believes that military expenditure could be halved whilst still improving national security, and the money thus saved could be diverted to "infrastructure, health care, and education that would benefit all Americans".[1][8]
Young also wants to abolish United States Africa Command, stating "it’s a purely military operation with Special Forces running around; no oversight. Helping our dictator friends in Africa avoid being overthrown by their own people."[1]
Young has also been critical of the United States support of Ukraine during the 2022 Russian Invasion of Ukraine. He has advocated cutting off military aid to Ukraine and ending sanctions against Russia. Young stated that, "[The United States] is destroying our own economy just to damage Russia and the Russian people... The ruble is stronger now than it was for years. So the sanctions have totally failed".[1]
On Aug 16, 2022, Young tweeted he had been predicting the success of the "Russian operation to demilitarize and de-nazify Ukraine" since March and his predictions had been "proven right". He described the government of Ukraine as "Nazi-dominated".[16]
Voting rights
Young has accused the Mitch McConnell and the Republican Party of trying to keep "groups that tend to vote Democratic away from the polls" in the November 2014 Kentucky election, by sending out official looking "Election Violation Notices".[8]
Young supports campaign finance reform and is opposed to gerrymandering, and alleges the Kentucky and Republican Democrat party rig election. Young sued Congressman Andy Barr in 2019.[1]
Environment
Young states that he knows how to work with the U.S. Department of Energy to help Kentuckians waste less energy and implement renewable energy technologies such as solar, low-head hydropower, wind power, and low-impact biomass energy. Young will also ask the Energy & Environment Cabinet to evaluate the feasibility of trash-to-energy power plants in Kentucky.
Young states that many recent efforts to eliminate environmental regulations have been counterproductive and immoral. These negative health effects contribute to increased medical costs for everyone.
In addition, Young states that global warming is a threat.[8][17]
Healthcare
Young supports Medicare for All. He would reintroduce the Expanded & Improved Medicare For All Act, which Representative John Conyers supported for more than 15 years before his death. It is only 11 pages long.[8][18][19][17]
First impeachment of Donald Trump
While Young has stated that the impeachment of Donald Trump over the Russiagate scandal was not solid grounds for impeachment but rather a “frivolous reason,” he does believe that President Trump and his Secretary of Defense James Mattis committed impeachable war crimes in Yemen, Syria, and “possibly other countries as well”.[20]
Drug policy and criminal justice reform
Young supports legalizing marijuana and all narcotics.
Young is against the death penalty.[1][8][18]
Taxes
Young supports raising taxes on the wealthy.[17]
Abortion
Young believes that by providing support and healthcare for families and lower income individuals the abortion rate can be decreased. Young has stated that Republicans are not pro-life but instead they are “Objectively Pro-Abortion”.[21][17]
