Jason Cruz Chavez is an American politician who is a member-elect of the Minneapolis City Council from the 9th ward.

Early life and education

Chavez was raised in Minneapolis. His parents immigrated to the United States from Mexico to escape impoverished conditions and violence.[1] Chavez earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in social work and organizational behavior from the College of St. Scholastica, where he was elected student body president.[2][3]

Career

Jason worked in the Minnesota House of Representatives as the legislative aide of State Representatives Mohamud Noor and John Thompson.[4]

In 2021, Jason will replace the retiring Alondra Cano on the Minneapolis City Council.[5] Chavez is a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, who also endorsed him, and was one of three members who won their City Council races in 2021.[6][7]
