Nathan Vasquez is an attorney who is currently the District Attorney-elect of Multnomah County. In the May 2024 election, Vasquez defeated his superior, incumbent Mike Schmidt, in the election.[1][2]
Career
In 2001, Vasquez graduated from Lewis & Clark Law School.[1] He immediately joined the Multnomah County District Attorney's office, initially as an intern, and later as a Deputy District Attorney, where he progressed from trying property crimes and juvenile cases to prosecuting high-profile criminal cases in and around Portland, Oregon.[3]
In 2022, Vasquez prosecuted the second-degree murder case of Benjamin Smith stemming from the February 2022 Normandale Park shooting.[3] In 2023, he successfully prosecuted an assault case against Tusitala "Tiny" Toese, a prominent member of the Proud Boys, which resulted in an 8-year sentence.[4]
In April 2024, Vasquez faced an ethics complaint before the Oregon State Bar when, in election material, he publicly accused a man of being a serial killer despite the man facing no charges.[5] The Oregon State Bar ultimately dismissed the complaint, citing "no sufficient basis to warrant a referral to Disciplinary Counsel."[5]
2024 District Attorney election
In 2020, Mike Schmidt was elected Multnomah County District Attorney in a landslide victory.[6] During his tenure as District Attorney, Schmidt faced criticism for many societal ills plaguing Portland, including homelessness, violent crime, and public drug use.[7]
In 2023, Vasquez announced his intention to challenge Schmidt in the 2024 election.[1]
During the campaign, Vasquez has earned broad support from Portland's public safety unions and business leaders.[8] He received sizable campaign contributions from many prominent Oregon businessmen, including Phil Knight, Tim Boyle, and Jordan Schnitzer.[2] Before the primary election on May 21, 2024, Vasquez was endorsed by The Oregonian[9] and Willamette Week.[10]
Vasquez won the election with KPTV calling the race by 9:30pm on election day, and other news agencies calling it the next day.[11] Schmidt conceded the race the next afternoon.[12]
The race was reported in national news due to similarities with recent elections in other cities where progressive district attorneys were defeated, such as the 2022 San Francisco recall election.[13][14][15][16]
