Peter Smart is a British user experience designer known for his work in the fields of human centered design.[1] and design thinking.
Early life and education
Smart started UK-based, graphic design firm Roam Design at the age of 15[2]. Upon graduating from the Arts University Bournemouth, he was the recipient of D&AD's New Blood Award[3]
Design career
In 2013, Smart worked with Thomas Frame's Etch Group. In 2015, he moved to San Francisco, California to work with international user experience design firm, Fantasy, since launching digital products for clients including Netflix, Spotify, British Airways, Royal Caribbean and Google. Smart is a contributing author to Smashing Media's 'Rethinking UX'[4] and author of the work "50 Problems in 50 Days." In 2014, Smart served as an advisor to The Government of the Netherlands on the role of design thinking in the development human centered policy and strategies for economic growth. His work has been published by NPR[5], Fast Company[6], Net Magazine[7], ITV[8], The Next Web[9] and Gizmodo[10] amongst others. He features as a headline speaker at international design conferences.[11][12][13][14]
50 Problems in 50 Days
In 2012, Smart published his "50 Problems in 50 Days" project: a diverse series of experiments to test the limits of design thinking's ability to solve societal issues. During the exercise, he travelled 2517 miles while attempting to solve the common societal problems he encountered by using the design thinking methodology. The project was the recipient of awards from Design Taxi[15], Awwwards[16] and was featured in Creative Review.[17] In 2013, Smart spoke at the Awwwards Conference in Paris on the project[18] and was subsequently listed as one of the "word's most relevant speakers".[19]
Awards
In 2012, Smart received Design and Art Direction's Best New Blood Award in for his work, 50 Problem in 50 Days[20] also winning awards from Design Taxi[15] and Awwwards.[16]
TV Appearances
On January 26, 2014, Smart appeared on Wake Up, Australia to discuss the impact of human centered design and rapid ideation.
