The Challenge (Charity)
The Challenge is registered charity..[1] based in London, whose vision is to build an integrated society where there is an understanding and appreciation of each other’s differences.[2] Established in 2009, The Challenge is non-profit organisation that designs and deliver programmes that bring different people together to develop their confidence and skills in understanding and connecting with others. Most notably, The Challenge piloted[3][4][5] a programme in London, what went on to be the National Citizen Service (NCS) scheme.
Description
The Challenge is the largest provider of NCS and regarding as the social integration leading charity in the UK[6][7], having offices in London, Surrey, Birmingham, Manchester, Leeds, Preston and Reading.
By 2019, The Challenge develops several other programmes promoting social integration, such as HeadStart[8] and HeadStart Young Refugees. HeadStart is an award winning[9] programme that encourages volunteering in the local community and helps to upskill young people and help them gain part-time employment. The Challenge also works closely with the DfE on its industry placements pilot[10]
Besides its programme based activities, The Challenge develops and promotes policy ideas to forge a more integrated Britain through projects such as the Social Integration Commission[11]. This independent inquiry, chaired by Royal Society of the Arts Chief Executive Matthew Taylor[12], sought to explore how people from different communities and backgrounds relate to one another in modern Britain. Since 2016, the charity acts as the secretariat for the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Social Integration[13], chaired by Chuka Umunna MP[14]
