Tim Norton (born May 23, 1983) is a former professional baseball player who is currently the pitching coach of the Rocket City Trash Pandas of the Double-A Southern League.
Playing career
He pitched 259 innings with the Connecticut Huskies over four years. In 2005, he played collegiate summer baseball with the Falmouth Commodores of the Cape Cod Baseball League, receiving the league's Outstanding New England Prospect award, as well as sharing the league's Outstanding Pitcher award with Andrew Miller.[1][2]
The next year he went 7-2 with a 2.04 ERA as a senior for UConn in 2006 and was drafted in the 7th round of the 2006 amateur draft by the New York Yankees.[3] Norton suffered a shoulder injury in 2007 and was moved to the bullpen after missing all of the 2008 season, but suffered another shoulder injury in 2009.[4] He again came back from his injury, pitching well in Trenton. When reliever Joba Chamberlain was injured in June 2011 Norton was about to be called up when unfortunately, he suffered another shoulder injury.[5] He attempted to come back a third time but was unable to regain his previous velocity and retired as a player in 2012.[4]
Coaching career
After telling the Yankees he was retiring as a player in spring of 2012 the team asked Norton to become a coach.[5] He made his coaching debut in 2013 with the Yankees' Gulf Coast League rookie-level team and would move through the system as pitching coach. He entered the 2019 season in his second year as pitching coach for the Double-A Trenton Thunder.[5] In January 2020, Norton was announced as the pitching coach of the Rocket City Trash Pandas, the Double-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels, for their inaugural season.[6] Rocket City takes the place of the relocated Mobile BayBears and will start play in 2020 in Madison, Alabama.
Personal life
Norton was born in Franklin, Massachusetts, but grew up in Rhode Island. He attended Suffield Academy in Connecticut on a baseball scholarship.[5]
